Phillip Schofield offers to pay struggling 73-year-old caller's £700 gas bill

Kind-hearted This Morning host Phillip Schofield said he would sort a struggling 73-year-old callers’ gas meter bill.

Worried Patricia called the ITV show to talk about her overdue energy bill, which had soared to more than £700.

The woman from Norfolk was so concerned about the costs stacking up as she searched for a better deal.

She had run up debt and spoke to Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis to ask for his advice.

The caller said she had no idea how to read her meter – but couldn’t switch to a cheaper supplier until the balance was paid.

She told them: “I had no idea how to, I’m 73. I didn’t know how to. They wouldn’t help me.”

Concerned Martin said: “Because you weren’t giving them readings, when you tried to switch it crystallised where you were and they said you are in debt with them.

“I will get one of my team to help you. “

Patricia then told them all the extra worry is really setting her back.

“It’s causing me not to eat or sleep,” she added.

Phil was shocked and said. “Oh no, no, no – one way or another we will fix this for you, OK?

“If the worse comes to the worst we will pay it for you,” before Holly added: “We will sort it out, don’t worry.”

Delighted Patricia then said: “I am so glad I got through to you now, thank you.”

Holly last week offered to send a struggling mum of three a printer so she could home school her children.

She made the gesture to the shocked caller, who was telling the pair and Deidre Sanders about how hard life was with her three kids not at school during lockdown.

June, who called the show from Nottingham, explained they have just one laptop between them all.

She described how she was forced to write out all of her twins’ work by hand because the family printer was broken.

Phillip offered: “You can’t beat yourself up about this, because there’s only so much you can do.”

But Holly knew there was something she could do.

She said: “Do you know what, I’ve got a spare printer at home. I’m going to bring it in tomorrow.”
