Kate Garraway 'unsure if husband Derek will ever recover' from Covid battle

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has revealed she has concerns over whether her husband Derek Draper will recover as he remains in hospital following his battle with coronavirus.

Derek was rushed into hospital in March last year after contracting the deadly virus and doctors told Kate his infection was the “highest they had seen in a patient who had lived”.

While he has recovered from the virus, his body has been seriously affected by it and he has been left with holes in his lungs and heart, plus diabetes.

Derek remains in a coma and doctors have warned Kate, who is now bringing up the couple’s two young kids alone, that he may never come out of it.

Kate, 53, told on the 5 Years Time podcast this week, she is still unsure if Derek will recover but is remaining hopeful.

She explained: “It’s been really tough for us. Derek got really sick in the beginning of March.

“Even though we’re hoping he can recover, it’s taking a very, very long time. We don’t know how much he can recover So that’s impacted on us obviously dramatically. So, it’s been really difficult.”

But Kate is optimistic that 2021 will be a better year.

She added: “Everybody is hoping 2021 will bring just a bit of hope and relief.

“The vaccine is here now, so everybody is hoping that will help Covid, I think, and help us regain some normality.”

Kate added returning to work on GMB and picking up her Smooth Radio hosting duties has provided a welcome distraction amid her personal crisis.

Last week Kate opened up about her struggles as Derek remains in hospital, as she discussed the impending release of her new book, which documents her daily struggles.

She told Good Housekeeping magazine she is finding it hard to keep it all together while her husband is still ill.

The presenter told the publication: “I’m not sure I am coping. I honestly don’t know how single mums do it, it’s just so hard.

“A lot of the time I find myself thinking, ‘What would Derek say?’ and ‘What would Derek do?”
