Alex Beresford breaks silence on Piers Morgan's exit from Good Morning Britain

Alex Beresford has responded to the departure of Piers Morgan from Good Morning Britain this evening.

The 40-year-old took to Twitter with a statement which revealed his thoughts on the fiery situation.

He wrote: “There is so much that could be said. Piers’ departure sincerely wasn’t the conclusion I was hoping for.

“Over the last few years, Piers and I have had a lively, cheeky on-air relationship. We both wanted to be on the show Tuesday morning, and from our very public conversations on Twitter, we both knew how strongly our opinions differed on the treatment of Harry and Meghan pre and post the interview that has split the world.”

He added: “I hoped we could reach a place of understanding.

“It’s sad that we weren’t able to get there, but challenging his opinion was not an outrage. On this occasion, we have to agree to disagree.”

Alex said: “I didn’t want him to quit, but I did want him to listen.”

He finished: “Personally, Piers has always supported my growth. He’s given me advice on several occasions and for that I am grateful.

“I wish him well!”

Piers’ exit from GMB was confirmed after he sparked backlash with controversial comments about Meghan Markle following her appearance on Oprah.

An ITV spokesperson said: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

The weather presenter pushed for Piers to leave the show earlier today.

Alex said: “Yet someone pulls you up and you spit your dummy out and walk away. Please do the world a favour and hand your resignation in on the way out.”

The pair had a furious clash when Alex criticised Piers for “trashing” Meghan yesterday, ending with Piers walking off set.

Alex said: “I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle. You’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme, and I understand that you had a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off.

“Has she said anything about you after she cut you off? She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. And yet you continue to trash her.”

Piers then stood and walked off the set saying: “OK, I’m done with this”, before returning ten minutes later.

Alex continued: “Do you know what? That’s pathetic. This is absolutely diabolical behaviour. I’m sorry, but Piers spouts off on a regular basis and we all have to sit there and listen – 6.30 to 7 o’clock yesterday was incredibly hard to watch.”

Piers has continued to stand by his words about Meghan Markle, taking to Twitter to make it clear he wasn’t budging.

“On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview,” he wrote.

“I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. If you did, OK.

“Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on.”

He went on: “Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”
