Good Morning Britain favourite Kate Garraway will show the harrowing change to husband Derek Draper’s physical appearance in her new documentary.
53-year-old former lobbyist Derek has lost eight stone since he was admitted to hospital at the start of the first lockdown in March 2020 with coronavirus.
The documentary will mark the first time that members of the public and even some of Derek’s family and friends have seen him since he was admitted to hospital, due to strict Covid-19 visiting restrictions.
Ahead of Kate’s new documentary, which will air on ITV on March 23, the I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star spoke to The Sunday Times magazine about Derek’s health battle and resulting change in appearance.
Kate, 53, shared: “The change in his body is shocking,” she warned journalist and family friend Decca Aitkenhead. “You’re going to be shocked, Decca.”
During the candid interview Kate also revealed that Derek is in a state of limbo, with doctors unable to give her any certainty about what his future will look like.
Kate continued: “The very worst moment was when they said he could be locked in forever. And I just thought, this is a horror story. I don’t know if he’ll ever have any kind of life again. We just don’t know.”

The presenter added: “They said, ‘It’s highly unlikely he will make a good recovery. But we can’t rule out that he’ll make a reasonable recovery.’ I said, ‘OK, what does a reasonable recovery look like?’ And they said, ‘Being able to hold a hairbrush.'”
Derek is now free of coronavirus, but has been left with several complications after Covid-19 wreaked havoc on his internal organs.
His kidneys failed, he suffered damage to his liver and pancreas, his heart stopped multiple times and he was left with holes in his heart.
He’s also been left with holes in his lungs after suffering multiple bacterial infections.
Doctors have tried to bring him out of his medically-induced coma, where he has remained with limited consciousness.
