It is believed that Kate’s husband has suffered kidney failure as well as serious damage to his liver along with now having “holes in his heart”.

At the moment, doctors are unable to determine what quality of life Derek will be able to lead when he is finally free from hospital.

The starlet also opened up about thinking she’d lost Derek at one point after the hospital had confused another patient with her loved one.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, she explained that she was waiting on the line to see “if he’d died or not”.

Kate told the publication that a person at the hospital then revealed: “He may have died. Somebody will call you back.”

Fortunately it was an error, Kate added: “It turned out that somebody had died who had a similar name to his.”

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs on March 23 at 9pm on ITV.
