Emotional Ben Shephard fears there will be 'huge crash' in Kate Garraway's life

Ben Shephard shared his fears about how Kate Garraway will continue to cope with the trauma of her husband Derek’s medical conditions, saying he’s worried she will have a “huge crash”.

The long-awaited and heartbreaking documentary Kate Garraway: Finding Derek aired on ITV tonight.

Kate Garraway opened up about her experience over the last year following her husband Derek Draper’s COVID-19 diagnosis, and cameras followed her into work at Good Morning Britain too.

Catching Ben ahead of a broadcast, filmmakers asked him what he thought of how Kate was coping with everything.

In a surprisingly candid moment for journalist Ben, who has known Kate for 20 years, he admitted to fearing for her having a breakdown when everything finally hits her.

Ben Shephard shared his fears for Kate Garraway

“Our relationship goes back 20 years, we first started working together at GMTV,” he said.

“Kate is brilliant at sharing what she’s going through – she’s always been really aware of the fact that people might think she’s using it as an opportunity [to get attention].

“She’s not at all, it’s not just her going through this… but it’s a testament to who she is – her strength of character, her positivity, her brilliant mind that she’s got this far.”

The presenter continued: “I just keep thinking there’s gonna be a huge crash at some point. Whether it’s a big move in his recovery or he comes home…

“At some point, I think it’s going to hit her what she’s been through,” Kate’s colleague worried.

Fans praised Ben for his supportive comments and were left emotional by the pair’s close friendship.

“Lovely to see @benshephard speak so openly & well about @kategarraway on #findingderek I really admire you Kate,” one person wrote.
