Chris Hughes throws support behind ex Jesy Nelson's decision to quit Little Mix

Chris Hughes has thrown his support behind ex-girlfriend Jesy Nelson’s decision to quit Little Mix.

The Love Island star, 28, dated Jesy from January 2019 until the pair unexpectedly called it quits in March last year.

Despite the split, the pair have remained close friends.

And after Jesy decided to step away as a member of the hit girlband, Chris says Jesy felt the “pressure” of being in the group as they reach the height of their fame.

Speaking to MailOnline, Chris said about Jesy leaving Little Mix: “All that stuff, it puts pressure on you and puts pressure on everything and you’ve got to do what’s right for you.

“She’s still a good friend but you’ve got to look after yourself as well.”

“I feel like career wise it’s nothing really to do with me but as a whole it’s so important, you’ve got to look after yourself and focus on yourself and I’m sure she will do well with whatever industry she decides to go down,” he added.

What’s more, the reality TV star said Jesy will “smash it” when she launches her solo career.

And when quizzed on their ill-fated romance, Chris said: “We just went our own ways and that’s life isn’t it?

“I don’t see any backlashes. Obviously I’ve had a few breakups in the public eye and sometimes they’re difficult and sometimes they’re not… It’s so true, you do need time after a breakup – you need time to reflect and do your own thing.”

Jesy quit Little Mix in December last year.

She penned to her 7.3million followers that she was leaving with a “heavy heart” as she reflected on the success the girlband have enjoyed since winning The X Factor back in 2011.

Jade Thirwall, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards have reacted to the news of Jesy’s shock departure and published a statement on the group’s Twitter page.

A statement published on the official Little Mix social page read: “After an amazing nine years together Jesy has made the decision to leave Little Mix. This is an incredibly sad time for all of us but we are fully supportive of Jesy.”

The girls went on: “We love her very much and agree that it is so important that she does what is right for her mental health and well-being. We are still very much enjoying our Little Mix journey and the three of us are not ready for it to be over.

“We know that Jesy leaving the group is going to be really upsetting news for our fans. We love you guys so much and are so grateful for your loyalty and continued support of all of us.

“We’re looking forward to seeing so many of you on tour.

“Love always, Jade, Perrie and Leigh-Anne xxx.”
