Mum’s approval is important when it comes to finding a potential match – as proven by two singletons on First Dates Ireland this week.
Best friends Laura and Aimee decided to bring their mothers on their date with them, as they headed out for dinner in the Coda Eatery at Dublin’s Gibson Hotel.
The Irish version of the hit dating show has been running since 2016, but Laura and Aimee’s decision to bring their mams in tow is a show first.
Both mothers sat at a separate table while their daughter’s got to know their blind dates, providing a hilarious running commentary throughout.
Before the evening kicked off, Laura’s mum confided: “I hope we’re in a position where both of us can see their dates coming in.”
When they got seated at a table, the pair tucked into mojitos and chicken wings, sitting back to observe their daughters on their dates.
At one point, Amy’s mum stood up to take a selfie, deliberately catching Laura and her date in the background.
She exclaimed: “If I take a selfie I’ll be able to get her in the background. I’ll be able to show them this photograph when they’re getting married.”
Amy’s mum was impressed when she saw her daughter’s date, instantly feeling his beige coat would be a hit.
“She’ll like the coat. She likes wee nerdy boys,” she explained.
When Amy confronted her mum over her choice of starter – barbeque wings – the mother replied: “I don’t have a date tonight, I can eat chicken wings.”
Later, both mums swapped seats to get a better view of their daughters, as Amy’s mother asked: “Do you want to swap seats so you can see her and I can see her?”
And, when Laura left the restaurant with her date for the evening, the young man turned to the mammies and remarked: “Don’t worry mam!”
Twitter was ablaze with messages of support for the two mums, as viewers took to their keyboards to thank the pair for their running commentary.
