Kate Garraway says Easter without Derek at home is 'so hard' in poignant update

Kate Garraway was in an optimistic Easter mood this weekend despite missing her poorly husband Derek.

The spirited Good Morning Britain and Smooth Radio presenter posted a sweet photo of her neighbour Suzy delivering a delicious-looking Easter cake this morning.

And in a heart-warming caption to her 1million Instagram followers, Kate said: “Everyone – so hard that it’s the second we’ve lived through in Lockdown/restrictions and of course our second without Derek home with us.

“But he is still here so we have so much to give thanks for and there’s lots to hope for isn’t there .

“Our day started with sun shining and our wonderful neighbour who we call ‘Cakesuzy’ bringing round the most amazing #easter cake ever she had made herself !!”.

Kate hopes love will eventually conquer all as Derek continues to recover from coronavirus.

Her unwavering bravery and strength were truly laid bare in a heart-breaking – and equally inspiring – ITV documentary Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, which aired earlier this month.

GMB presenter Kate was trying to stay positive over the Easter break

Derek – her partner of nearly 16 years – was admitted to hospital in March last year with the life-threatening virus. He’s been there ever since.

And the emotional one-hour special allowed viewers to see for the first time just how incredibly difficult it’s been for the respected TV presenter and her husband, as well as her family and friends.

Thankfully Derek no longer has Covid, but the severe respiratory disease has sadly ravaged his body.

He has lost a staggering eight stone in weight – and also tragically suffered kidney failure, damage to his liver and pancreas, and heart failure.

Kate’s poorly husband is now out of a coma, but is still suffering from the effects of coronavirus

And at one point, perhaps understandably given the terrifying ordeal he’s gone through, Derek admitted he feared he couldn’t go on as the illness took its toll.

But Kate’s love and support have never wavered during the hardest year of the couple’s life – and the deeply intimate and personal film looks back over her husband’s shock hospitalisation.

And Kate has been spurred on by thousands of heart-warming messages of support and from well-wishers who have taken time to comment on her popular social media page.

“Fabulous…..hope you are managing to make happy memories,” commented one fan. “Derek is always in my prayers.”

“Ahhhhh Happy Easter Kate, Derek, Bill and Darcy. Stay strong everyone…,” added another follower.

A third offered: “Happy Easter you wonderful lady. I truly feel we can all learn so much and take from your love and strength for Derek and your family.”

“Happy Easter Kate, take care,” said a concerned admirer. “Hope everything works out for you and Derek soon.”
