Kate Garraway reads Piers Morgan's book to husband Derek at his hospital bedside

Kate Garraway has been reading her good friend Piers Morgan’s book to her husband Derek Draper as he remains in hospital.

The 53-year-old former Labour lobbyist remains in intensive care a year after being struck down by coronavirus.

Piers, 56, has revealed that Kate, 53, told him about the activity during a length chat the pad had after her emotional documentary aired last month.

Writing in his Mail on Sunday diary, Piers said of his second birthday in lockdown: “It also served as a stark reminder of how grim things were on March 30, 2020, especially for my stupendously courageous and inspiring friend Kate Garraway.

“That was the day her husband Derek was rushed to hospital with Covid, and he remains seriously ill.

“I spoke to Kate at length when her incredibly powerful documentary about it all aired on ITV last week, and she told me she’s been reading Derek my book, Wake Up.

“Never have I wished those words to be more prescient.”

Derek contracted Covid-19 last year and remains in hospital after being placed into a coma with the virus causing him to suffer multiple organ failure.

Good Morning Britain favourite Kate gave fans a glimpse into her life in a poignant ITV documentary Finding Derek, where she allowed cameras to follow her and her family as they came to terms with the implications of her husband’s illness.

Viewers were left heartbroken as they watched Derek sob “I don’t want to carry on”.

He cried: “There’s no way out, there’s no way out.”

Kate, who was at home with their two children Darcy, 14 and 11-year-old Billy, replied calmly: “What do you mean there’s no way out? In terms of what?”

The father of two said: “I’ve got to the point where I just think, f*** it. F*** it.”

Kate asked: “As in die?” and when her spouse said yes, she replied: “No….no.”

Derek grew more distressed and tearful and sobbed to his wife: “I don’t know how to cope, I don’t know how to cope.”

Former I’m A Celebrity contestant Kate is remaining optimistic and has renovated the family’s London home to make it more accessible for Derek when he is eventually allowed to return.

Speaking about viewers’ reaction to the documentary, Kate said it was “difficult” for her to decide whether or not to film the episode, she reached out to people who wanted to speak with her personally about their own experiences.

Kate hopes to shine a light on the situation, especially for people experiencing the same or a similar situation to Derek and her family.

The broadcaster is set to release a book about Derek’s ongoing health battle later this month.
