Katie Price says mum Amy's terminal illness is 'slowing her down'

Katie Price has opened up about mum Amy’s terminal illness, saying that the disease has been “slowing her down”.

Amy has suffered from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis for the past four years, despite leading a healthy lifestyle.

Since Amy’s condition makes her vulnerable she has been unable to see a heartbroken Katie or her grandchildren since October.

But the former glamour model says the 66-year-old refuses to give in the illness “without a fight”.

She has taken up choir to open her lungs more and still does cardio classes every morning despite needing oxygen.

Speaking The Sunday Times Magazine Katie said: “She puts on a massive show of strength but her illness is slowing her down.”

“She has joined a choir to open up her lungs. She’s not giving in without a fight.

“We’ve both got tough exteriors, neither of us show anyone what’s going on inside. Because we know we’re losing Mum, nothing goes unsaid. I know everything about her and she knows everything about me.”

“I miss holding her and giving her a cuddle, but there’s a lot of banter on our family Zooms too, because if we didn’t muck about we’d never get through it. She knows that out of everyone, I’ll be the one who cares for her at the end,” the 42-year-old added.

Amy’s condition means her lungs have been scarred meaning every breath is a struggle.

When she was first diagnosed back in 2017 she was told she could have as little as two or three years left.

Katie described how fit her mum is, and detailed her mum’s swimming talents, saying she had nearly made the Olympics.

She said: “My childhood was all about fresh air and staying healthy. Mum is an exquisite swimmer. She trained with Sharron Davies and almost made the Olympic team.”

During a recent interview on BBC Northern Ireland’s Nolan Live, Katie said: “My mum doesn’t smoke, she’s always been so healthy and she’s got this incurable lung disease and there’s nothing you can do.

“So the British Lung Foundation, she got us in touch with them to talk to other people and they just said, ‘Build memories, take lots of pictures’ and that’s all you can do really. What else can you do? You know it’s coming.”

“She’s only got like 32% left of her lung capacity, we have got 100 per cent, she’s got 32.”

‘So if you imagine now being that out of breath, it must be awful, and it’s an awful way to go. It’s horrible to see my mum go through it because she’s so active, it’s cruel.”
