The inventor behind Seaspiracy clashed with Dermot O’Leary on This Morning earlier this week, when they failed to see eye-to-eye on the ethics of eating fish.
The former X factor presenter, 47, previously owned his own fish restaurant, named Fishy Fishy, with venues in Brighton and Poole.
Thanks to his experience in setting up the restaurant, Dermot argued it was okay to eat fish if it had been responsibly sourced.
He added the restaurant refused to put cod on the menu, because he was aware the fish species had depleting numbers.
However, Ali Tabrizi, whose documentary Seaspiracy – investigating the environmental impact of fishing – has become a Neflix hit, was quick to shut down Dermot’s comments.
He argued that putting other varieties of fish on the menu was just as threatening to the fish population.
“Sometimes you could get by-catch and say well let’s just keep it and that will be sustainable but all that means is that the population of say dogfish starts getting depleted,” Ali said.
“Time and time again we have this ‘adapt to diminishment’, the cod goes down so we move on to the next fish. That population goes down, then we move on to the next fish.”
The filmmaker went on: “So those measures might be better but ultimately I think we need to be leaving your oceans alone at this point.”
At the end of the interview, Ali looked visibly frustrated by the conversation and could be seen shaking his head.
They were also joined by British fisherwoman Ashley Mullenger on the show, who suggested the industry needed a change in approach.
She said: “I think there’s a lot this industry can do and I think there’s a lot people already are doing.
“There’s some great initiatives surrounding recycling, the nets and things like that which do wash up.”

Ali appeared to disagree with her comments, as he could be seen shaking his head in response.
Dermot’s fish restaurant shut its doors in 2016, closing down after seven years of business in the seaside town of Brighton.
Making a statement at the time, he said: “After seven years Fishy Fishy is moving on from our 36 East Street location.
“We would like to thank all of our customers, staff and the good people of Brighton for their loyalty and support. Future plans are currently in discussion.”
