Later, Piers added: “Has there ever been a more heart-breaking picture of The Queen? The cruel separation and loneliness suffered by so many in this pandemic, now endured by the world’s most famous woman as she says goodbye to her husband of 73 years. Just devastating.”

One of his followers replied: “No woman or man regardless of who you are should have to be alone and walk in to a church alone when you are saying your final farewell to your partner of 73 years.

“This is a prime example of where Covid rules should have been allowed to be bypassed. Very, very sad.”

Another wrote: “I don’t know any person who’s been married for over 70 years and shows so much respect for her husband, could not be more proud of our Royal Family right now.

Someone else commented: “It’s beyond sad. Would anyone really have begrudged her having someone sit with her today? She’s a 94-year-old woman. It’s beyond cruel. I appreciate she probably wouldn’t have had it any other way as she’s so bound by duty but it’s just awful to see her all alone.”

A fifth said: “I can’t start to imagine being at my husband’s funeral sitting on my own and the world’s camera being on me.”

And another added: “She does not deserve to sit alone on such a difficult day. At least Princess Anne should have been there with Her Majesty. She needs comfort. This is sad.”

Prince Philip died at the age of 99, a few months shy of his 100th birthday, on April 9.

He was laid to rest today (April 17) at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
