Kate Garraway shares husband Derek's final texts before being put in a coma

TV presenter Kate Garraway has revealed heartbreaking texts from her husband before he was put into a medically-induced coma.

The Good Morning Britain host featured in an emotional ITV documentary which followed her husband Derek Draper’s battle with coronavirus.

And for the first time, Kate has revealed the contents of “desperate” last texts and phone calls from Derek before he was put in a coma.

Kate’s new book details her and Derek’s struggles during arguably the toughest year of their lives and reveals examples of her husband’s texts from hospital.

In her memoir The Power of Hope, which is being serialised by the Mail on Sunday, Kate reveals that she feared the worst in March last year when 53-year-old Derek was admitted to hospital.

The day Derek was lifted into the ambulance – before what proved to be over a year-long stay in hospital – Kate said her husband stated: “This is not the last time you will see me. It isn’t.”

But Kate admitted that her husband “would never have said that if at least a small part of him hadn’t been wondering if it was”.

An understandably worried Kate didn’t know what to expect once Derek had been admitted to hospital during the height of the Covid pandemic.

But she admitted Derek had said in an emotional phone call: “I want you at the funeral.”

Mum-of-two Kate, also 53, admitted her husband’s messages became increasingly “desperate” and even more “heartbreaking” to read.

Derek was released from hospital last month after more than a year confined to a hospital room as he fought the disease.

But doctors have stressed to Derek and Kate that he has been “universally affected” by the illness, with his heart, lungs, kidney, liver and pancreas having all been damaged after Covid ravaged his body.

Kate hosting Good Morning Britain

Derek became the UK’s longest-serving Covid patient – and a brave Kate has supported her husband throughout the harrowing ordeal.

Yesterday Kate spoke to GMB’s doctor Amir Khan on the breakfast show, discussing that the incredible Covid vaccine jab roll-out has slashed infection rates by 90 per cent.

“It’s the news we’ve been waiting for, surely?”, asked Kate.

“They’re saying Britain has moved from a pandemic to an endemic, it’s going to make people think, ‘oh thank God is this VE day, is it all over?'”

Show medic Dr Amir Khan replied: “Hopefully we are turning the tide on this.

“We still need to take caution, we’ve seen in India what happens when you lift restrictions too quickly or you don’t have any restrictions at all.

“The vaccine is really good in bringing down the virus, but I wouldn’t say we’re yet out of (a pandemic) yet.”
