Kate Garraway has revealed she ignored some advice from her ex Good Morning Britain colleague Piers Morgan during her husband Derek Draper’s illness.
The 53-year-old television star and Derek, 53, experienced a distressing year after he became seriously ill with coronavirus.
Derek is now home from the hospital after being there for over a year.
Amid Derek’s coronavirus battle, Piers urged Kate to make notes to write a book, but she said she didn’t listen to his advice at first.
Kate Garraway: The Power Of Hope is set to be released later this week and spoke about the memoir, during an interview with Iain Dale on LBC.
She said Piers had a big influence when she was “ranting” at everyone while “trying to make sense” of what was happening in her life.
Kate explained: “Piers said, ‘You’ve got to write this down,'”
She ignored his suggestion as she “didn’t have time to write it all down”.
Piers suggested Kate “write down words” because she “wouldn’t remember” everything that was happening.
Kate eventually took Piers’ advice and began writing notes about Derek’s situation, and her notes became the foundations of the memoir.
Numerous people reached out to Kate while Derek remained seriously ill in hospital.
Writing in her book, which is being serialised in the Mail on Sunday, Kate told how David Beckham sent her two children Billy, 11, and Darcey, 15, video messages as he offered them support.
In her memoir, Kate wrote: “I hadn’t had the chance to look at social media so it was Darcey and Billy who spotted it and squealed with delight.
“I messaged him back, thanking him and saying the kids were thrilled.”
She continued: “He sent a personal video to each of them – words of encouragement and fun. He said he’d been thinking of his own kids and how they might feel.”
