The Met Gala ball formally referred to as the Costume Institute Benefit is known to be one of the most fashion-focused events in the celebrity calendar.
The ceremony that usually takes place every year is an extravagant fundraising event that aims to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
The Gala offers the biggest names in showbiz the chance to showcase their most daring, iconic and often outlandish stylised pieces of clothing on the star-studded red carpet, with celebrities going all out for the invite-only occasion.
As well as fashion, the Met Gala has often hit headlines for celebrities doing the most extravagant things while on the carpet.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s event will definitely make up for lost time, as organisers have decided to run the gala across two separate dates.
Just like every other year, the Gala will be a themed event, giving celebrities and designers the chance to interpret the theme the best way they know how.
As the date of the ball slowly creeps upon us, Daily Star has taken a look back at the most rememberable and best dress outfits from celebrities over the years.
Rihanna
Musician Rihanna knows exactly how to ace an assignment and has made several lasting impressions at previous Met Gala ceremonies – which has led the star to be labelled as the queen of the Met Gala.
For the 2018 Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination themed event, the star stole the show once again as she turned up wearing a pope-inspired dress.
Designer John Galliano crafted the extraordinary look, complete with intricate beading that studs the entire garment from head to toe.
Serving Pope John-Paul realness the short beaded dress hugged her curves as she elegantly flowed down the carpet wearing a large headdress.
Though the dress and headpiece caused controversy at the time, it certainly did turned heads.
Kim Kardashian
Though ex-husband Kanye West went for a more simpler approach, reality star Kim Kardashian was not playing any games at the Met Gala event in 2019, as she made sure she turned up the heat in her skin tight Thierry Mugler gown.
For the 2019 Camp: Notes on Fashion theme, Kim opted for a corseted dress that clung tightly to her waist and highlighted all her curves, giving the effect the dress was wet.
The dress that took approximately eight months to complete paid homage to Sophia Loren in the movie Boy On A Dolphin.
Speaking to US Vogue about the gown, Kim explained: “This is the first time in 20 years Mr. Mugler has designed for the House of Mugle.”
“So to come and design this gown for me is such an honour. This is about eight months in the making. He envisioned me this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping.”
Naomi Campbell
British model Naomi Campbell did exactly what she does best at the 2019 Met Gala ball, wearing a lilac Valentino Couture gown and a feather cape that most definitely turned heads.
The beautiful gown sported a plunging neckline with amazing feathered detailing. The star accompanied the look with baby pink laced stockings.
The model later admitted that the dress was a last-minute decision and was finalised 48 hours before the ball.
Speaking openly about her outfit on Youtube, Naomi explained: “So this outfit was made in pretty much 48 hours for the Met Ball 2019.
“I was a guest, I was with Pierpaolo. He arrived on Saturday, [and] he completely dismantled the dress.”
She added: “They’re so amazing at their craft and what they do, Pierpaolo and his team… this [design] did not exist.”
Kendall Jenner
Model and reality star Kendall Jenner took a more risqué approach to the 2017 Comme des Garçons’s Rei Kawakubo themed gala, with her see-through dress certainly being one for the history books.
Known as one of the most undressed celebrities on the carpet that year, Kendall sported a bold cut-out gown with a glitter-flecked La Perla slip.
The transparent dress left little to the imagination as it showcased her amazing toned physique and peachy bottom too.
She also added pointed high heels which elongated her legs even further.
Harry Styles
Harry Styles made a bold fashion statement at the 2019 Met Gala ball, which led several fans to have hot takes on his outfit online.
The One Direction singer attended the star-studded event in a black jumpsuit designed by Gucci’s Alessandro Michele.
Harry wore a sheer top that had a large black bow tied at the chest– showing off his tattoos underneath and gave fans a glimpse of his nipples too.
The star accompanied the look with jewelry and black nail varnish.
Speaking about the look at the time Harry said: “I mean, I think it’s about enjoyment and about fun; no judgement. And having fun with clothes. I think fashion is supposed to be fun. And I think it’s a good time for that as well.”
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga certainly got tongues wagging as she stripped off on the red carpet back in 2019, strutting her stuff on the steps of the Museum of Art.
Ditching her elegant frock, Lady Gaga, aka Stefani Germanotta, showed off her famous figure in a bedazzled bra and knickers, completing the look with fishnet tights and huge platform boots.
Striking a number of poses on the floor, the singer ensured all eyes were on her during the star-studded event, with the cameras going wild for her outrageous arrival.
She finished the look off with huge eyelashes and bright blonde hair, adding a slick of lipstick in the racy display.
Jennifer Lopez
2019 was most definitely the year for sexy looks on the red carpet and Jennifer Lopez made sure she gave fans something to remember in her silver Versace dress.
The singer’s flashy Versace dress featured a plunging V neckline and a thigh-high slit that accentuated all her curves in the best possible way.
J. Lo’s dress was dripping with beads and embellishments that made the star sparkle on the red carpet.
The star also accompanied the look with a matching embellished wig that sat effortlessly on her head.
Looking like a silver goddess Jennifer wore the Versace dress with pride and as always the star gave her appreciation to the designer who also crafted her famous plunging green dress.
In 2019, Jennifer said: “I’ve had a long relationship since this green dress with Versace.”
