After six nail-biting Line Of Duty episodes, Sunday night is expected to be an explosive one, as millions of viewers across the country will sit down to watch the final episode of the BBC’s crime thriller.
The latest series has left audiences hooked, with last week’s episode watched by an astonishing 11 million viewers.
But after the last gripping episode that included energetic car chases and the revelation of DCI Joanne Davidson’s family history, many LOD enthusiasts hope that all clues will be revealed.
Earlier this week actor Martin Compston informed fans that there may not be a seventh series of the cop drama. So with this being the case, viewers across Britain pray that the final episode comes to a healthy conclusion with no stone left unturned.
So as we gear up for the final episode, here are some questions that still need answering.
The workshop floor
Steve Arnott and Kate Fleming noticed that the machinery found in the OCG’s gun workshop was far too heavy for two men to lift. But this leaves the question as to why did the OCG send a pair of thugs there when they believed the coast was completely clear?
Heavy tools that were discovered suggested that they were about to do some digging.
Perhaps introducing ground-penetrating radar will help solve this mystery, but what will be found under the workshop floor if it was to be dug up?
Some suspect the weapon that killed Gail Vella or could it be evidence that could potentially incriminate higher-ranking police officers? Whatever it is that lies underneath the concrete floor may possibly lead to “H”.
Is Chief Constable Philip Osborne H?
Several Line Of Duty critics believe Chief Constable Philip Osborne played by actor Owen Teale, could in fact be “H”.
In the sixth series of the cop thriller, Constable Philip is currently doing his best to dismantle the anti-corruption units within the police force. Apart from his involvement in the Lawrence Christopher case, there is no real supporting evidence against him, so this could potentially provide him with a decent motive for killing Gail Vella and maybe link him to former bent copper Tommy Hunter.
If we look back at Philip’s track record though, there are a few incidents that could raise audience’s suspicions.
In series one Constable Philip attempted to cover up the Karim Ali killing which resulted in the death of an innocent man.
He was also very friendly with other bent coppers “Dot” Cottan and Derek Hilton. Let’s not also forget that Philip Osborne is high up in the police force so could be calling all the shots.
Who is DCI Jo’s step-dad?
Some believe that by judging by her rather timid response, Joanne Davidson seemed unaware that her “Uncle Tommy”, formerly the head of the OCG, was also her father.
But who did she believe her father was? In the last episode, Jo did reveal that her dad was a bent policeman, but this doesn’t mean that he was around throughout her upbringing. And let’s not forget that she refers to her father as “uncle”.
Though Jo’s dad Tommy coerced her into a life of crime, there is a possibility that she was informed as a child that the man who raped her mum was a bent copper, but she may not actually know his identity.
Despite this, Jo did react to the image of Marcus Thurwell, so it is evident that she knows who he is but ultimately he may be too young to be her dad. Could it possibly be Osborne?
What will happen to Ted Hastings?
Ted is heading into retirement with his pension safely on its way. Osborne, who is not really a big fan of Hastings wants him gone too, as he continues to reform and merge AC-3, AC-9 and AC-12 which will leave several staff members to be transferred to other teams as a result.
So as things gradually move, could anything prevent this from taking place? Could Hasting unmask the possibility that Osborne is “H” and become a hero as a result?
If “H” is revealed and Hastings wins his battle, will he still long to retire to spend more time involving himself with his fishing pursuits.
Also, viewers may remember the fact that Steve Arnott discovered that Hastings informed the OCG that John Corbett was an undercover officer which led to him being killed as a result.
Arnott still attains the hard evidence – the cash in Steph Corbett’s attic as proof of his guilt.
Is Patricia Carmichael bent?
Patricia Carmichael has certainly had a marmite effect within the force but for Ted Hastings he certainly has not been won over by the ice queen.
At every turn, she has managed to trample on his investigations into police corruption. Recently she pulled down the surveillance operations, that halted the prosecution of DCI Ian Buckells and refused to allow Hastings to ask Davidson about OCG/police connections during Davidson’s interview.
She is clearly one of the strings that Osborne is able to pull but is that because she is bent or just a studious pupil who is looking to further her career.
Viewers may also question her link with DI Michelle Brandyce. We last saw Brandyce being told by Carmichael, to put in for a transfer away from AC-3 due to an error she made while investigating Hastings.
But could this lead Brandyce is returning for revenge against her unpleasant old boss?
What is Chloe Bishop’s story?
Many critics believe that there may be a bit more to Chloe than one may first realise. When looking at her role from a more speculative lens, you begin to realise that there is definitely more meat on the bones with this character.
Before the sixth series of Line Of Duty began, Tony Gates – one of the original bent coppers from series one, had a daughter named Chloe.
Tony’s Chloe had a resemblance to Bishop, who would be roughly the same age as Tony’s daughter now.
This leads to several questions, for example, could Chloe be joining the force to revenge her father? Or maybe she is also working with the OCG?
Though there is no concrete evidence for this, it may be one to look out for.
What will happen next for Steve Arnott?
The lovable Steve has been through a lot throughout previous seasons and this has definitely been the case in the sixth installment of Line Of Duty.
But now it appears as though Occupational Health who he’s been intentionally avoiding may be his downfall. The policeman has been avoiding them for weeks and is currently on his final warning. If he doesn’t see them in five working days, he will be suspended.
Arnott who is addicted to pain killers must face his demons and visit Occupational Health before it’s too late.
Could H be revealed within 5 days while he’s still able to work?
Who is Gail Vella’s killer?
The mystery behind who killed Gail Vella has still not been solved, despite being the main focal point of this whole series.
Viewers have been lead to assume that OCG’s Carl Banks murdered Gail after she visited his brother, Lee, in prison and informed him she was investigating the Lawrence Christopher case.
Despite this, viewers are still unaware if Carl is the killer as there is no concrete evidence that he is the murderer.
Vella’s research is now available to the police due to Joanne Davidson’s tip-off that Vella’s stolen computers were hidden at the old OCG printshop.
Could Vella’s evidence lead to H?
Marcus Thurwell’s body
Several fans believe that Thurwell is still alive and well while others also believe that he might be Jo’s step-father.
Despite viewers being presented with a body after police raided his Spanish home, it was unclear whether it was actually Thurwell.
Some fans evens suspected that he was one of the police that raided the home.
If Thurwell is in fact “H”, or involved in the OCG, this means he would have the power to arrange a switch with the Spanish police and scarper.
What will happen to Kate Fleming next?
After she attempted to flee the scene of the crime with Joanne Davidson after the shooting of Ryan Pilkington, many have asked what will happen next for Fleming?
To Fleming’s surprise, she had to learn from Arnott that Carmichael had suddenly taken over AC-12, which Arnott described as “an unexplained interruption to the chain of command”.
