Line of Duty star Nigel Boyle has opened up about the moment he found out his character was H.
13 million tuned in to watch the final episode of the sixth series of the BBC police drama on Sunday night.
The 60-minute final gave viewers the solution to one of the most long-standing clues in the quest to find H aka The Fourth Man – the misspelling of “definitely”.
It was later revealed that bumbling DSI Ian Buckells was in fact H.
Actor Nigel, who has played Buckells since series one, appeared on Monday’s edition This Morning to discuss the big twist.
He said: “I’ve received so many messages once friends and family learned I was H. I can’t believe the response.”
Speaking to hosts Phillip Scofield and Rochelle Humes about the moment he found out he would play such a key role, Nigel said: “No one knew who was H for a long time. We got half the scripts just before Christmas 2019.
“It’s all kept very ambiguous. Just before resuming filming after lockdown [creator] Jed Mercucio asked me if I was free for a chat.
“He said the rest of the script is going to be released today but you’re going to be revealed as someone quite significant.
“We resumed shooting at the end of August 2020.”
Nigel later shared that his wife was the only family member who knew he was H.
BBC bosses have remained tight-lipped as to whether there will be a seventh series of the popular cop drama.
When asked if there was going to be another series, Nigel said: “That’s a question for an officer at least one rank superior. No Comment.
“Of course we want another series, but only if it’s the right one. But I’ve never known such an incredible response to a TV series in my life.”
Despite H being revealed in the series finale, many viewers have slammed the disappointing episode.
Taking to Twitter on Sunday, one fan moaned: “Laying in bed thinking about how almost 10 years of my life have been building up to most possibly the most disappointing ending in tv history.”
Anothe added: “That was SO DISAPPOINTING IM SO SAD FOR THE SHOW.”
A third ranted: “That ending was not what the country needed after the year we have had. How many more disappointments can we take. Who decided to end it like that? Absolutely fuming.”
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10am
