Family of trans boy, 4, didn't believe in transitioning before son's decision

The parents of a four-year-old trans boy say they would not have believed their son’s story 18 months ago – and will support him if he changes his mind.

Proud Matthew and Klara Stubbings say they knew and accepted the youngster was born the wrong gender in 2020.

By the age of just three, Stormy, formerly known as Emerald, was able to say “I’m not a girl, I think I’m a boy”.

They told Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby about the family’s incredible journey on This Morning.

Stormy is one of the youngest people in the UK to ever transition and they say they will be right behind him – even if he wants to be a girl again in the future.

But Matthew, from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, revealed: “I thought it was made up, I thought it wasn’t real.

“If 18 months ago I would have heard this story from someone else, I wouldn’t have believe it.

“But because I have seen it, experienced it, and I have learned about it, I totally support what Stormy has decided to do.

“What he has decided should be celebrated. We are so proud of the choice he has made.”

The dad added: “So many people think biological sex and the gender is the same thing. Including myself two years ago. People need to respect others more.”

Stormy’s mum Klara told Holly and Phil: “We thought that he just wanted to be like his brother at first.

“But it wasn’t a case of Stormy saying ‘I am a boy’ and us telling him ‘yeah, you go for that!’.

“He is an intelligent boy who knows what these things mean.

“So what if Stormy wants to go back to being a girl next week, or if he wants to be non-binary, then we will fully support him.”

Matthew, 44, says his child always hated pigtails, dresses and pretty shoes.

The tot’s dad added that they have had a hard time getting some adults to accept the decision – as many who they encounter still insist on calling him a girl.

The dad recently posted a heartwarming tribute to his son on LinkedIn and shared a photo of Stormy sporting his new short and spiky haircut.

“This is one of my sons. A bright, happy boy who loves his life.

“What many people don’t know is that when he was born he was ‘sexed’ as a girl. His gender identity, what’s in his head, doesn’t match his physical sex.

“I am so proud that he knows who he is and isn’t constrained by societal norms and prejudices.

“We can all learn something from this small boy and I learn every day. Everyone is different.

“We all need accept that people are different and not try to force those around us to fit into a box that suits us.

“Accepting people for who they are is the only way to encourage innovation, embrace growth and harness the best in everyone.

“I have permission from my son to post this. He is proud of who he is.”
