Ellen DeGeneres and Dakota Johnson's awkward stand-off resurfaces as show ends

The video of Dakota Johnson firmly correcting Ellen DeGeneres on her chat show went viral – again – yesterday.

Dakota turned the tables on Ellen DeGeneres back in 2019 when the chat show host said she wasn’t invited to her birthday.

Ellen tried to call out Dakota for not inviting her to her birthday but the actress quickly retaliated saying “that’s not the truth”.

Known for her role as Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, Dakota Johnson had the internet buzzing after her awkward interview on The Ellen Show.

The Twittersphere cannot be underestimated, as online users on the social media platform started sharing the video again yesterday.

The celebration was to mark ‘Dakota Johnson Day’.

In the interview, Ellen wished the Fifty Shades of Grey actress a happy belated birthday, before going in for the kill.

Ellen asked how the party was because she “wasn’t invited”.

But Dakota was quick to call out the chat show host, telling her and the audience what actually happened.

“Last time I was on the show last year, you gave me a bunch of s*** about not inviting you, but I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited. I didn’t even know you liked me!”

Ellen acted shocked and responded: “You knew I liked you. You’ve been on the show many times. Don’t I show…’like’?”

The chat show host then checked with a crew member before saying she “had a thing” and joking that “it was probably in Malibu…that’s a bit too far for me to go.”

Ellen ended up confessing to remembering being invited but that she “really didn’t remember that until just now.”

It was later revealed that Ellen missed the star’s birthday party as she was attending a Dallas Cowboys game with George W. Bush.

The interview went on to take more awkward turns as the two discussed Tig Notaro performing at Dakota’s birthday.

Dakota then revealed that the stand-up comic is “her favourite comedian” – leaving the notoriously funny Ellen a bit put out.

Ellen reminded the actress that she potentially introduced the pair, after Dakota was invited to Ellen’s birthday – where Tig also performed.

The car crash of an interview continued, with Dakota then sharing the fact that she left before Tig’s performance.

In the interview, she exclaimed “gosh, this isn’t going well!” after Ellen asked why the actress left early, in outrage.

Twitter users had huge praise for Dakota’s time on The Ellen Show, with one writing “Can Dakota Johnson go on James Corden’s show next”.

After over 3,000 episodes, Ellen reportedly told her cast and crew that the show will end.

Ellen told The Hollywood Reporter that “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged – and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore.”

Social media doesn’t seem too upset, with user @BridgetMarie writing: “It will NEVER not be funny to me that Ellen’s public downfall started when she lied about not being invited to Dakota Johnson’s party, when in reality she couldn’t come because she was at a football game with her good friend George W. Bush.”

The show will allegedly continue for one more season, before ending at the end of this year.

It comes after ratings for the show have been at an all-time low: the show has lost 59 per cent of viewers in Los Angeles, as well as a 40 per cent knock in ratings in New York City and Chicago over the past year.

Last year, Kevin T. Porter attacked Ellen as “notoriously one of the meanest people alive”, creating a Twitter thread for those who had similar experiences of the chat show host to share them online.

Ellen addressed the accusations and took time at the beginning of her show last season to make a public on-air apology.

Yesterday, Kevin tweeted a meme, inspired by Kamala Harris receiving the phone call about Joe Biden making US President, captioned “We did it, Dakota.”
