After what was supposed to be a night of celebration and joy turned to allegations of drug use against the lead singer Damiano David, Eurovision Song Contest winners Måneskin are determined to clear their name.
Social media quickly filled with claims that you could see David snorting something as he bent down over the table in front of him as his band members cheered to the camera.
In a post-victory news conference the singer was asked if he had snorted cocaine in the broadcast, with David denying the allegation and stating that he does not use drugs.
The band jumped on BBC Breakfast this morning to further try and clear their name.
Now in Rome, the band came via live link with a drug test planned for later today.
David said: “It was the moment they were giving us 12 points and in the meanwhile, Thomas broke a glass,
“So while I was cheering I saw the glass broken and was like, ‘Oh god, what happened?'”
While some Twitter users were sceptical of the story, one user provided proof that a glass had been broken that day and that part of the story was at least true.
David spoke about how the story affected them after their win, saying: “I feel really offended. I think this kind of thing is outrageous. We are young guys with huge passion for music and I think this is overshadowing our win but we will get a drug test and get the proof.”
He confirmed with Louise Minchin that the drug test would be later today, following the interview.
Another member of the band, Victoria De Angelis said that the allegations made them “sad” and stressed the fact that they don’t use drugs, instead they want to spread a positive message.
Getting their start busking in the main shopping street of Rome, the Italian rock band managed to score 524 points for their song Zitti E Buoni, putting them 25 points above the second place winner, France.
Over seven million people watched the show in the UK but sadly our James Newman ended up at the bottom of the leader board with nil points.
