Fans of The Chase were left puzzled after one contestants on the ITV show tried to compliment her fellow teammate – saying she had “Essex knowledge”.
On Tuesday’s show (25 May), four new contestants – Andy, Heather, Ahmed and Nichola – stepped up to face Chaser Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis, 40, in a bout to win their cash prize.
And one contestant in particular – Heather – who is an arts graduate and budding screenwriter from Cheshire – managed to ruffle some feathers on social media when she tried to praise her teammate Nichola.
Heather, who says she wants to write for television and film and builds robots in her spare time, enjoyed a successful cash-builder round after she managed to outrun Darragh to secure £5,000.
This came after her fly-fishing teammate Andy, 62, was the first hopeful to be hunted down by Darragh.
And when it was Nicola’s turn to face The Menace after her opening round helped stack up her team’s £8,000 total profit, Heather came out with a rather unique compliment about her fellow contestant.
When asked by host Bradley Walsh what she had to say about Nicola’s performance, she said: “You are a really good player but you have that Essex knowledge that us Northern guys don’t have”.
“So yeah… we need you back”.
And Heather’s amusing attempt at praising her glamorous Essex co-contestant – who is a business and management tutor – caused quite the stir on social media as fans didn’t know what to make of Essex-themed comment.
Taking to Twitter, many viewers of the show were quick to air their confusion.
One baffled Twitter user penned: “Essex knowledge? I’ve never heard of that phenomena before!” with an awkward face emoji.
A second commenter simply wrote in: “That Essex knowledge ???”.
A third user joined in and was quick to see the funny side of it, saying: “Nicola has Essex knowledge, does she?#TheChase” before attaching with a light-hearted GIF of a TOWIE star Joey Essex saying “Naughty!”.
A fourth said “What is Essex knowledge??!!”
A fifth fan also wanted to make fun of the awkward moment, adding: “Essex knowledge…” whilst attaching a GIF of Friends actor Paul Rudd spitting his drink out.
Unfortunately, smiley Nichola didn’t make it to the final round and was kicked off the show after just losing out on £5,000.
However, Ahmed was able to follow Heather’s successful lead and secured £3,000 before the pair achieved a whopping 18 steps with Ahmed gaining an impressive streak of correct answers.
But Darragh was able to beat them and maintain his six-month long clean sheet by matching their score with 30 seconds to go.
However, the Chaser said they should be proud of their performance and host Bradley added that tonight’s candidates were a “very good team”.
The Chase airs on weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
