BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker was left red-faced after a joke about his figure touched a nerve.
The usually unflappable host uncharacteristically snapped at co-shot Sally Nugent after she poked fun at his physique following a section with top Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty MBE.
Sally had been talking to Adam ahead of this summer’s Tokyo Olympics, but herself and co-host Louise Minchin were left in hysterics when Dan compared himself to the Olympic champ.
“He’s unstoppable, isn’t he? He is unstoppable!” said Dan, referring to Adam’s incredible success in the pool.
Sally added: “We had Mark Foster on the show on Sunday, and he said on air ‘he will win gold in Tokyo – barring injury and disaster – he will win gold, there’s nothing to stop him.’
“He’s [Adam] got such a great attitude as well, he’s got the mind completely right, so relaxed so focused.
“He said he’s done these competitions and now he’s going back into the trenches.”
Dan then joked: “Similar upper body to me as well actually. A lot of care and attention has gone into that.”
Sally was left in a fit of giggles at Dan’s hilarious quip, as was Louise who was literally lost for her words, leaving Dan seemingly baffled.
“Hold on a minute, why are you two laughing so much?” questioned Dan.
Jayne McCubbin then did a weather update with the UK on for the wettest May on record and Louise, who had managed to regain her composure, said: “We’ve just got to get through it – we’ve been looking through our phones and this time last year, it was blue skies, bikinis…”
“I wasn’t wearing a bikini,” Dan interjected and Louise remarked: “Despite your Adam Peaty body.”
Sally said: “I wonder if he gives himself a little bit of a day off after the weekend?”
Dan offered: “He’s probably training?”
Sally joked: “He’s probably been training Dan, I mean, that’s what you’ve done already this morning as Adam Peaty’s body-double.”
“Yes, nice early weights session this morning,” Dan remarked.
Splash sensation Adam then appeared on the show via a live video link from his Loughborough home.
After the segment Sally praised: “He’s so great, isn’t he such a great attitude, so positive?”
Dan responded: “Incredibly confident without being arrogant, just perfect.”
“Bit like your good self with the whole body-double thing,” Sally brought back up.
Dan clearly wanted the running joke to come to an end and hit back: “Let it go Sal, let it go,” as the awkward topic of conversation swiftly moved on.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC.
