BBC Breakfast's Naga Munchetty warns Oti Mabuse 'be careful' over Broadway diss

BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty was forced to step in during Thursday morning’s show, as she chatted with Strictly Come Dancing professional Oti Mabuse live in the studio.

Oti was discussing her new role as choreographer alongside director Arlene Phillips on the new Cher stage musical, which is being imported from Broadway to the West End.

The theatre production tells the story of Cher’s rise to fame and features many of her iconic hits, including I Got You Babe and Believe.

But as Naga grilled her on how she’ll adapt the hit play for a UK audience, Oti appeared to have landed herself in a bit of hot water.

“So what are you working on in terms of changing the show – what are you finessing?” Naga quizzed.

“I think because it came from Broadway, it was amazing, but now that it’s on the West End, I want to give it the respect that the West End has – this is the West End! We’re not playing here!” Oti replied.

But Naga interrupted: “You need to be careful because anyone on Broadway listening to you will- yeah. So you need to be careful. So come on – define it.”

A red-faced Oti continued: “Well what I’m saying is that I want to bring the UK audiences to the theatre to feel like they’ve seen something that they love and can connect with. Was that better?”

“Honey, I’m not on Broadway – it doesn’t bother me!” Naga giggled.

But fans on Twitter didn’t seem to mind the slip-up – they were just glad to see Oti’s face while eating their breakfast cereal.

“Oti Mabuse on Breakfast… comes across so well! Enthusiastic, fun and hard working – great role model,” one wrote.

Another added: “When @OtiMabuse pops up on my TV and I had an actual meltdown.”

While a third penned: “Oti is so lovely and bubbly, cheered me up for the day!”

And someone else posted: “@OtiMabuse loved your interview on Breakfast just now!”

Elsewhere on the programme, Oti revealed that Strictly Come Dancing is her “home”, as she admitted: “I love Strictly. Strictly for me is home.

“It’s where I feel my best self and where I can be me, and without Strictly I would never have had the opportunity to sit here with you [Naga] and talk about dancing!”

She continued: “Who I am on Strictly just describes me and that’s how much I love that show.”

Oti might have been attempting to smooth things over with BBC bosses, after she made headlines when she said that getting the call to be a judge on ITV’s The Masked Dancer was “the best, best call” of her life.

The star risked upsetting her BBC bosses over at Strictly Come Dancing, as she said: “When I got the call.. Oh my goodness. I broke out in song and dance.

“I think I sang something from Wicked like Defying Gravity.

“I was in my house and I had a scarf and I was like flying the scarf around like ‘I’ve made it’,” she laughed.

The show, a spin-off from hit game show The Masked Singer, will see a judging panel comprised of Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and Mo Gilligan attempt to guess which celebrity is dancing underneath a bulky costume.

Oti admitted some of her guesses were “insane”, as she had “no advantage” over her fellow judges.
