Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley has clashed once more with Dr Hilary over rumoured plans by the government to delay the ending of lockdown.
The outspoken TV host has made no secret that he thinks Boris Johnson is being too cautious with his slow unlocking of the nation.
However, Dr Hilary thinks it would be madness to unlock on June 21 as planned when cases are rising.
Kicking off Tuesday’s show, Richard appeared to speak in distain for government advisors Chris Whitt and Sir Patrick Valance.
The chief medical officers are reported to be currently playing a somber tone in Whitehall meetings about the state of Covid in the UK.
Turning to her co-host Susanna Reid asked: “Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Valance – what did you call them Richard?”
Looking far from impressed, he dryly added: “The Chuckle Brothers!”
The camera then cut to Dr Hilary who laughed awkwardly.
Susanna continued: “They have given a very downbeat briefing suggesting that the latest data is fairly grim and that lifting the lockdown will be delayed now for a couple of weeks.”
Cutting in, Richard jabbed at Dr Hilary: “You’re going to agree, aren’t you?”
Sticking to his guns, he replied: “I am.
“I mean, we’re looking at rising cases, we’re looking at a population where – still – only 75% have had the first jab and just over half have had the second jabs. So a lot of people unprotected with a variant which is pretty nasty.
“So the idea of mass gatherings, the idea of people abandoning masks, hand sanitising and social distancing is crazy at a time when things are getting worse.”
Richard went on to argue that the link had been cut between catching Covid, hospitalisation than deaths.
“And that is why we need to be a little more patient, get everybody vaccinated and then we can start thinking about lifting restrictions,” Dr Hilary interjected.
“If we do it too early, there’s a risk of going where we were back before.
“We’re asking people aged 29 to 25 now to come and get their vaccines by coming forward. So if we can accelerate that – as we’ve done so well already – then we’re nearly there by autumn.
“So we might have booster jabs by then.”
