Gok Wan is going to have all his hair shaved off live on This Morning to support a 12-year-old relative of his who has cancer.
The fashion stylist’s cousin’s daughter, who is only 12, is undergoing gruelling chemotherapy and has shaved off her own hair.
Little Alyssa, who is in hospital in Leicester, was diagnosed with blood cancer three weeks ago and her treatment is making her hair fall out.
Gok, who is from Leicester originally, will have his locks chopped off live on Thursday, June 24, to raise money for Young Lives vs Cancer, a charity that supports young people with cancer and their families.
He has so far raised £18,000 since he started the appeal.
He said in a Facebook post on Friday: “As you can imagine, this news has been a huge shock and a really scary.
“Alyssa is being very well looked after by the incredible NHS staff in Leicester – thank you.
“She has started her chemotherapy and is thankfully reacting well to the treatment, which means hopefully Alyssa can go home soon.
“On Wednesday Alyssa made the brave decision to shave off her hair as the treatment has already started to make her hair fall out.
“To show my support to her, and the many people who are undoing cancer treatment, I have decided to cut my hair off too and raise as much money as possible for the incredible charity www.younglivesvscancer.org.uk who help young people like Alyssa and their families.
“If you can, it would be wonderful if you would sponsor me. All the money will go to the charity.”
Gok spent years battling mental health issues and anxiety but recently admitted that he is finally happy with who he is.
According to the Daily Express, he said: “I love my life. I have the best life and I am really happy about who I am as a person which is a stage I never thought I would get to when I was younger.
Gok, also said that he is a realist when it comes to whether or not he will have children.
The Look Better Naked host said: “Of course, if I had wanted to have children, there are ways of doing it.
“But at the age of 47, which I will be this year, I think the chances are probably closer to no than they are yes, right now.
“I had also wanted to see if I could do some formal education and get an academic skill, but I’ve got commitments with my life, my friends, family, and have I got the energy and time to do that now? It would mean sacrificing things that are too important to me.
“It’s almost like a reverse bucket list!”
