Piers Morgan has admitted he has “always needed a rivalry” to get him out of bed in the morning, and that he loved his public feud with Dan Walker.
The former Good Morning Britain host, 56, has spoken out about his public rivalry with his “long-time breakfast foe” Dan Walker, 44, who currently presents BBC Breakfast.
Writing in his latest column for MailOnline, Piers recalled a hilarious game of golf he played earlier this month after running into his old foe Dan on the green at the lush Wentworth Club in Surrey.
Ready for a game of golf with cricket legend Kevin Pietersen, the former TV anchor found broadcaster Dan “smirking in the sunshine” on the green – and Piers hailed the event as one to bring some “most savage banter” which would make England v Scotland at the Euros 2020 look like a “chummy tea party”.
As he ran into his old television opponent, Piers said he got a dig in early by saying Dan was trailing in his wake “as usual”, after Dan told him he was in the group teeing off after him.
Apparently the pair laughed, shook hands, and chatted about old times and their television careers.
Discussing his conflict with Dan, Piers wrote: “I thoroughly enjoyed our public feud, in which I billed myself as the Minister-mauling Rottweiler to his timid poodle.”
He then confessed: “To be honest, I’ve always needed a rivalry to get me out of bed in the morning, just as Cristiano Ronaldo once told me that thinking of Lionel Messi was his only motivational tool to go to the gym every day.
“But once the war’s over, it’s over, and I’m always then happy to break the peace bread with once sworn enemies.”
Piers also added that he managed to rib Dan about Good Morning Britain beating BBC Breakfast in the ratings during the golf stint, calling across the green that he’s still enjoying GMB finally beating BBC Breakfast’s viewing numbers.
Piers and Dan have enjoyed a long-time rivalry with each other, with Piers regularly taking cheeky swipes at Dan from his old GMB desk during various on-air segments.
The TV anchors also regularly trade verbal digs on Twitter, and earlier this month Piers reacted to Dan’s heartfelt tribute to his co-star Louise Minchin who recently announced she would be stepping down from hosting the show.
Sharing Dan’s heartfelt Twitter post to Louise on Tuesday (June 8), Piers took to ribbing him and teased he would be replacing Louise as he wrote: “Stop blubbing Dan – I start Monday.”
Piers penned: “BBC wanted the guy who beat you in the ratings, and the first same-sex male breakfast presenting team to appease the wokies.”
And earlier this year – in March – Piers was delighted to reveal his final GMB show had clipped BBC Breakfast in the ratings, proudly declaring “his work is done” after the win.
Piers has since dropped a bombshell claim when he said ITV bosses had reached out to him asking him to make an epic return to Good Morning Britain.
