The One Show star Alex Jones takes sly dig at ITV over Euros coverage

Alex Jones hit out at rival broadcaster ITV on Monday’s episode of The One Show.

The BBC programme host took a swipe at ITV’s coverage of the Euros, and appeared to blame the broadcaster for England’s losses in their games so far.

England have so far played two games this year, beating Croatia and drawing against fellow home nations country Scotland.

But according to Alex, there seems to be a pattern in England’s wins – and it’s all down to which channel they’re being shown on, apparently.

The games are split between both BBC and ITV – which has caused disruption to TV schedules, including soaps being pushed back and shown on streaming services instead of at their usual times.

Speaking to footie pundit Jermaine Jenas, Alex said: “Well, a few people, right, and this isn’t an exact science – but apparently, England win far more games when the games are covered on the BBC rather than ITV.”

Jermaine quickly stepped in to tamp down on the direction the conversation was going in, as he said: “You know what, let’s just leave that there shall we, and get on with tonight’s show!”

But Alex professed she didn’t know a lot about football, along with guest and comedian Joe Lycett.

“You’re doing a great job,” Jermaine told Joe as he provided applause as the audience was absent due to pandemic restrictions. “Better than our team England against Scotland.”

“I don’t know football, but yes,” Joe said knowingly.

“Oh, I’m talking to two of you today then!” Jermaine laughed, gesturing at his co-host.

“So, home nations – that’s good, because they’re all through?” Alex quizzed her hosting partner.

“Nearly,” Jermaine explained. “You were doing so well. England look like they’re gonna be going through. Wales are through, you’ll be pleased to hear. But Scotland have got a bit of a game to come up against Croatia, but it’s just got a bit more difficult for them.”

But the hosts both knew Scottish player Billy Gilmour had been forced to self-isolate after coming into contact with Covid-19 – so the Scots would have more of a tough time against their next rivals.

Last week, The One Show turned slightly awkward as Oasis legend Noel Gallagher spoke about his drinking habits during lockdown.

The Wonderwall singer said: “Got into drinking at home which is great, I haven’t done that since the 90s. And that’s been going really well.”

Presenters Alex Jones and Ronan Keating were left feeling awkward at the remarks, but Noel pressed on: “That’s the thing I’m going to try and keep up you know.

“You know, some people keep up knitting, I’m gonna continue drinking at home actually.”
