Nick Grimshaw suddenly quits Radio 1 after 14 years as replacements confirmed

Nick Grimshaw has quit Radio 1, it has been confirmed, bringing his 14-year tenure to an end.

According to The Mirror, Jordan North and Vick Hope will take his place on the air, with BBC bosses recruiting the radio stars as Grimmy’s replacement.

The radio star, 36, reportedly told BBC bosses several weeks ago he was throwing in the towel, having enjoyed his time with the station.

A source told the publication: “Grimmy has loved every minute and done everything he ever dreamed of on Radio 1.

“It has been a really hard decision but he is looking forward to the next chapter in his life.”

In reference to his replacements, the source added: “Grimmy will be a really hard act to follow but bosses are delighted that Jordan and Vick have agreed to team up as part of a new look Drivetime.”

Cutting her teeth on the Capital Breakfast Show, Vick has carved out a hugely successful career in TV and radio, joining the BBC in 2020.

Radio star Jordan, who has previously filled in for Nick Grimshaw and Scott Mills on the air, became a national treasure last year when he was a finalist on I’m A Celebrity.

The source added to the publication: “They’ve both earned the chance to reach a much bigger audience and fully intend to grasp what is a brilliant opportunity.”

Nick will reportedly announce his exit from the airwaves on Wednesday, sharing a statement during his Drivetime show.

The announcement will likely come as a shock to many of his loyal listeners, who have tuned into the television and radio presenter for over a decade.

The Mancunian presenter joined BBC Radio back in 2007, bringing his trademark wit to shows like Switch or The Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

Celebrity Gogglebox star Nick, who appears on the Channel 4 reality show with his niece Liv, officially took over from Chris Moyles on The Radio 1 Breakfast show in 2012.

Fancying a change, he bid farewell to the early morning show in 2018 and was succeeded by radio star Greg James, who continues to host the show today.

Nick then took over the Drivetime slot in the evenings on Radio 1, looking forward to enjoying a later start to his day.

In a statement shared on social media, he told fans at the time: “I had the time of my life. I’ve decided it’s time for a change and a new show.

“I love Radio 1 and can’t wait to get on with the new time slot and the removal of all alarms from my house.”

It’s not clear whether Nick has decided to move to another network, or abandon radio altogether, focusing on his many projects in television and the arts.
