A celebrity chef divided viewers on Sunday Brunch when he did a cooking demonstration for beans on toast.
In the episode of the Channel 4 show on July 11, TV chef Simon Rimmer made the tinned classic from scratch.
Simon told the audience: “So, we’re going to make beans on toast. We’re going to make bourbon beans on toast.
“The interesting ingredient in it. We’ve got some peaches in there.
“The little bit of fruitiness cuts through the heaviness of the beans,” he explained.
Baked beans have been adapted to British tastes to be quite a bit less sweet than the classic American recipe, but Simon played homage to the roots of the dish with maple syrup and bourbon whiskey.
He said: “It’s quite a traditional thing they do in the southern United States as well.
“We’ve got chillies, we’ve got garlic and we’ve got onion.
“Then the sauce itself. You can either mix all of the ingredients together or just chuck it into the pan.
“We’ve got black treacle, smoked bourbon, tomato ketchup, some brown sugar, some maple syrup, a bit of vinegar and some smoked paprika.”
The chef dished up the beans onto griddled bread and added pancetta for the meat-eaters.
While his guests Aston Merrygold and Harry Redknapp seemed to find the beans delicious, Samantha Womack made a cheeky dig that was echoed by viewers at home.
The former Eastenders actress joked: “It’s like posh student food, isn’t it? Is that fair?”
She still seemed to enjoy Simon’s creation, but some viewers remained deeply skeptical.
