Piers Morgan accuses Wembley invaders of 'super-spreader event' but went himself

Piers Morgan has hit out at Euro 2020 final invaders by claiming they probably turned the game into a “huge super-spreader event” – even though he attended the big game at Wembley himself.

The former Good Morning Britain anchor slammed intruders of the match whilst defending his own attendance at the Euro final, which was held at Wembley on Sunday night and saw England lose to Italy on penalties after the game went to extra time.

It comes after Piers enjoyed watching a number of Euro games during the tournament, and he insisted his own attendance at games was safe as those in the crowd had been vaccinated or had shown negative Covid-19 tests before being let into the stadium.

The official attendance at Wembley stood at around 67,000 during Sunday’s final, and although Piers was pleased with Wembley bosses’ safety measures he was fuming at those who managed to break into the stadium despite not buying tickets.

Piers, who is now double-jabbed, took to Twitter to vent his frustration at the intruders for putting the country at risk of spreading Covid, after one follower called him a “hypocrite” who told him he “looked pretty free at Wembley”.

Piers had previously lashed out over the safety of the upcoming ‘Freedom Day’ of July 19 where social distancing measures are set to be scrapped, because Covid cases have been on the rise with figures in the tens of thousands.

After being called a “hypocrite” for attending the football game, Piers defended his own presence at the London match.

He replied: “Yes, it felt safe and covid compliant (everyone either fully vaccinated or negative LFT) at Wembley during the Euros until the final when 1000s of drunken morons crashed their way in with no tickets or testing – and probably turned it into a huge super-spreader event.”

Lashing out at ‘Freedom Day’, the bold broadcaster had previously tweeted: “So to summarise: we’re steaming ahead to covid ‘freedom’ on July 19 as cases and hospitalisations are accelerating again and just 1/3 of us have been fully vaccinated.

“Boris Johnson is taking yet another massive gamble in this pandemic – and none of his other gambles worked.

One Twitter user had questioned Piers’ decision to attend the game amid his recent Covid worries, prompting Piers to hit back: “Very happy to attend outdoor events where everyone is either fully vaccinated or has had a lateral flow test.”

“Not so happy if everything gets opened up on July 19 without such requirements, and with covid cases surging so fast + many millions still unvaccinated”

Dozens of England fans reportedly burst into the stadium a couple of hours before the game after getting past stewards – with riots breaking out and a crush which overwhelmed stewards.

Police made 49 arrests after England fans stormed the stadium and even started attacking Italian fans – sickening footage also emerged of Italian fans being attacked inside Wembley and 19 Met Police officers were also injured by the “volatile crowds”.
