BBC Breakfast's Louise Minchin scolds Dan Walker for 'awkward' wedding jibe

BBC Breakfast turned awkward on Monday morning after one cheeky wedding jibe from host Dan Walker.

Dan and co-host Louise Minchin were settled on the red sofa to discuss the easing of coronavirus restrictions in England on so-called ‘Freedom Day’ – and one subject was the restrictions for wedding ceremonies.

As the duo chatted to weather presenter Carol Kirkwood about the gorgeous conditions during the current heatwave, Louise remarked: “It’d be a nice day for a wedding, wouldn’t it?”

“Oh, yes,” Dan agreed, as Louise began to explain: “From today…”

But Dan wasn’t letting the opportunity for a cheeky quip pass him by, as he wondered: “Is there something happening I don’t know about?”

Through her giggles, Louise tried to say: “Couples in England… will be able to…” but had to cut herself off to keep from laughing.

“Sometimes you make it very awkward, you know!” she scolded Dan as the former Football Focus presenter collapsed into hysterics beside her.

And he continued to giggle as Louise said: “Okay! Couples in England will be able to say ‘I do’ in front of more guests as the restrictions on the number of people attending weddings ease.”

A contrite Dan finally said: “Sorry!” as soon as Louise had finished speaking.

But fans on Twitter weren’t letting the pair get off that easily, as one joked: “I bet Louise would love to say ‘welcome to BBC Breakfast with Dan and Louise Walker’!”

Luckily for Louise, however, she has been happily married to hubby David Minchin since 1998. The pair live in Chester with their two daughters Mia and Scarlett.

The family have a Labrador called Waffle and two miniature Shetland ponies, Hollie and Muffin.

That wasn’t the only awkward moment on Monday’s show, as Dan branded Louise ‘untrained’ after a whopping newspaper blunder.

Discussing the easing of restrictions, it was Dan’s job to hold up each newspaper as Louise read the headlines aloud for viewers at home.

Louise hedged: “I think it’s the Financial Times next?”

And Dan swiftly replied as he held up the paper: “You’ve got a Financial Times over there, Louise, but I’m not sure you’re trained enough to do this, so I’ll continue!”

That wasn’t the end of Louise’s woes, as Dan jokingly hit out at her after a scheduling blunder that left Louise red-faced.

The duo were chatting to Professor Linda Bauld about the easing of restrictions, as Louise encouraged viewers to send in their questions about England’s new rules.

She turned to the professor and said: “Linda, you’re here – I think it’s like, twenty past seven or something?”

Linda put in: “Just after eight.”

“Thank you!” Louise giggled. “Glad you know what you’re doing!”

Dan quickly quipped: “I can hold up the running order if you like?”

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am each day on BBC One.
