Maureen Lipman heartbroken after saying goodbye to late partner in full PPE

Dame Maureen Lipman has opened up about losing her partner of 14 years to Covid-19.

Coronation Street star Maureen and her partner Guido Castro were together for 14 years before he sadly passed away in January after a long battle with the virus.

Speaking to The Mirror, Maureen opened up about what it was like to bid farewell to her partner while wearing full PPE.

Maureen said: “It is unbelievable to have to say goodbye to somebody with gloves and a pinafore on, it doesn’t bear thinking about.”

He technically survived a long battle with the virus, but Dame Maureen says it led to his quick demise soon afterwards.

“He survived Covid in a care home. But he didn’t really survive,” she said.

“It knocked the stuffing out of him.”

Guido’s final days were spent in a care home, where Maureen was allowed to visit him, unlike all those who lost loved ones earlier in the pandemic.

Although she was allowed to visit her partner, she wasn’t able to hold his hand, and she had to wear full PPE at his bedside.

The star, who plays Tyrone’s nan Evelyn Plummer in Corrie, knows she was one of the lucky ones.

Maureen was quick to point out that she’s not blaming the Government, with the rules in place for the right reason.

She said: “They could have done better but who the hell knew what to do? The scientists’ opinions are all different. I don’t know that anybody could have got this right. It’s a nightmare.

“When you’re in a war zone, you are grappling in the dark, and we as citizens have to accept what comes down, right or wrong.”

Maureen had been with Egyptian-born computer expert Guido since 2008, four years after losing her husband of 30 years Jack Rosenthal.

The Celebrity Gogglebox star, who famously starred in a popular BT-advert, is throwing herself back into work, urging everybody to “just carry on”.

“We’ve all suffered and lost people. Life goes on and in the Jewish prayer for the dead there is no mention of the person who died. It’s a thank you for life. The truth is you just carry on.”
