Charlie Dimmock was warned against not wearing a bra during Ground Force stint

Charlie Dimmock has opened up about how she was warned against going braless by a TV presenting legend.

The BBC Garden Rescue star famously opted to go without a bra while presenting garden makeover show Ground Force in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Now, more than 15 years after the programme ended, Charlie has opened up about how iconic TV presenter Esther Rantzen warned her that the move would stick with her forever.

Charlie told The Independent: “The TV presenter Esther Rantzen said to me, ‘You’ll be labelled the braless one for the rest of your life.’

“Ground Force was a long time ago, and I have to say, even now, people will bring it up. It is very silly,” she said.

“It was always just for comfort,” Charlie explained. “If you’re swinging a sledgehammer, you want to be comfortable! People say, ‘Why don’t you wear a sports bra?’ But those are not the comfiest things in the world.”

During a 2016 interview with The Express, Charlie admitted she still ‘sometimes’ enjoys weeding without the support of an underwire.

And back in 1996, Charlie told The Mirror that she did sometimes put a bra on after work – but she simply “cannot abide tight knickers”.

“I have a few sets of underwear which you wear just to get undressed in, sort of pretty,” she said at the time. “But other than that, I don’t wear much underwear at all.

“I only wear underwear if I have to get undressed in front of someone. So no bra. And no knickers either. But if I do wear knickers, they’re sort of Marks and Sparks 12-14s, because I cannot abide tight knickers,” she splurged.

“I find thongs quite uncomfortable as well. So I’m better without knickers altogether.”

She has since said that she is ‘too old’ for marriage and prefers to stay single

Charlie has said she is “too old” for marriage now, after relationships with two Ground Force crew members back when filming the programme.

She was in a relationship in the late 90s with viticulturist John Mushet, but they split in 2001 after Charlie had a fling with microphone operator Andy Simmons.

She said she had no regrets at the time, and admitted to The Daily Mail shortly after news of her affair broke that she didn’t see Andy any more – though they had spoken a few times.

In 2016, she told The Daily Mail: “I’m too old now, certainly too old for marriage, there’s no point.

“I can’t see anything happening when it comes to romance; somebody would have to really bowl me over. I am quite content without a man in my life,” she confessed.
