Love Island Danny's tattoo artist insists inkings aren't racist amid N-word row

Danny Bibby turned heads as soon as pictures of him were released before he went into the Love Island villa.

The 25-year-old plumber from Leigh, near Wigan, has spent more than £20,000 and 400 hours on his body art.

However, following the uproar after an historic Instagram comment was uncovered where Danny replied “my n***a” to a friend, some viewers have been examining his body art closely.

Several viewers have tweeted serious allegations, claiming that a large portrait on Danny’s stomach is of “a German soldier”, and pointed out the numbers 13 and 28 on his wrists.

They were alluding to “racist” meanings, which have been strongly denied by Danny’s tattoo artist.

Sam Janbi from Apollo Tattoo Arts, is the creator of the stomach piece in question.

He says: “Oh my god… It’s Thomas Shelby and his flat cap, with the razorblade and a Union Jack flag behind him”, he said of the portrait of the iconic Peaky Blinders character.

He exclaimed: “I’m genuinely struggling to see how they’ve got a German soldier out of this.

“As for the numbers, a lot of tattooed people see 13 as a lucky number. I don’t know what the 28 means but it’ll have meaning to him.

“There’s loads of us in the tattoo trade with a 13. I have one.

He added: “I’m totally shocked by the reaction to his artwork. I don’t know how people are making this up.”

Danny first started his tattoo collection seven years ago, and has been coming to Sam roughly once a month – before the pandemic.

“He comes in his slippers and his dressing gown. He’s got his own cup here at the studio!” jokes Sam, as Danny is such a regular.

He also has a Batman themed leg sleeve, and a tattoo of the iconic Stifler from American Pie.

“I’d say he’s 90% covered, and I’ve done 80% of them.”

Sam said people’s judgement of Danny because of his tattoos are unfair.

He said: “The comments yesterday were so fickle, you know. Do we live in such a fickle society?”

“People were saying he looks like he’s come out of prison because of his tattoos. Are we still in that day and age now?”

Sam added about the criticism: “Whatever happened to the ‘be kind’ slogan?”
