Happy Mondays rocker Bez worships cider and reckons it's medicine sent from God

Booze-loving Bez worships cider as he reckons it’s medicine sent from God.

The self-confessed “boggle-eyed” freaky dancer says the drink has the “spiritual” power to soothe.

Bolton-born Bez, real name Mark Berry, said: “I’ve had a long-lasting love affair with apple cider over the years. I just love the apple.

“There’s no contest as far as fruit goes, in my eyes. It’s from the Garden of Eden.

“With some cider you can literally taste the spirituality in it. When you think about it, the apple covers every angle: it gets you drunk, it’s great food, plus it’s really beneficial medicine.”

The dad-of-three – whose hobbies include brewing beer and beekeeping – said his obsession with scrumpy started when he was 11, and he and his pals stole a batch from a Bulmers brewery.

He confessed: “Me and a group of lads did a raid on it before my first-ever school disco.

“We hopped the fence and grabbed a load of cider for the occasion – and that was the first time I ever got drunk. It was a fantastic night.”

The maracas-shaker has joked he now only takes drugs “at the weekends” after his decades of hellraising with bandmate Shaun Ryder, 58.

He says the only mind-bending substance he now regularly takes is herbal supplement Gingko, which he says improves his memory.

The Celebrity Gogglebox star previously said he believe sugar is the gateway into hard drugs.

He said sweet treats are ultimately to blame for a lot of the world’s illegal substance addictions.

He told Daily Star in January: “What I’ve found is if I stop it completely – I get headaches. So I get my sugar hits. And people say the gateway to drugs is cannabis and all that, well I actually think it’s sugar.

“When I was a kid I would do anything for sweets.

“I definitely think sugar is probably the gateway for everybody as a young kid into addictive behaviour. I have to eat a whole packet if I open a packet of sweets or a packet of biscuits – I even eat full cakes.

“My missus says to me: ‘I can’t believe you’ve eaten that full cake already!’”

Bez has been open about taking drugs in his wild past as a pop star. Now he is on a health kick after launching Get Buzzin’ With Bez on YouTube.
