'Prince George cartoon is not as mean as people think,' insists The Prince voice star

Creating an animated show featuring Prince George, 8, was always bound to cause a fuss. The Prince, recently released on HBO Max in the US, has created outrage on both sides of the pond.

In the show, created by Will & Grace executive producer Gary Janetti, the eight-year-old royal is portrayed as spoiled and sassy. Now Scottish actor Alan Cumming, who plays George’s butler, has defended the cartoon.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Alan was asked if he thinks the Royal Family will see the funny side.

He replied: “I don’t know. If they appreciate satire, they might… It’s quite tender, actually – my character with George, it’s a really lovely relationship. It’s not as mean as people think.”

Royal watchers are outraged that the show mocks Prince George

Alan, 56, went on to say that there’s “a knee-jerk reaction” whenever you do something about the Royals, and he advises those who have been upset by The Prince to “watch it”.

However, The Prince currently has no UK broadcaster.

Alan also told The Telegraph that he really admires Harry and Meghan for “removing themselves from a situation which they found abusive, not just keeping their heads down and staying in ‘The Firm’ and being bullied, which they obviously were. I absolutely have sympathy for them.”

Alan think people should “just watch” The Prince

One of The Prince’s other cast members has also defended his decision to do the show. George’s uncle Prince Harry is voiced by actor Orlando Bloom. Awkwardly, Orlando and his wife Katy Perry are neighbours of the Sussexes.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter he said: “Initially, I was like, ‘Hmm, how do I feel about this,’ because I’m a British boy who’s very proud of my roots.

A-lister Orlando added his voice to the controversial show

“I understand how the Royal Family is loved by some and loathed by others, and I’ve always understood it as part of my heritage and background.”

However, it was Katy who convinced him to join the cast, saying it was “genius”.

Other members of The Prince’s voice cast include Game of Thrones actors Sophie Turner and Iwan Rheon, and Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens.
