Inside Emmerdale's Peter Amory's marriage to on-screen step mum and 'fling' with co-star

Peter Amory is famous for playing the role of Chris Tate on Emmerdale, and he was a fan favourite during his time on the ITV soap.

Starring in the village between 1989 and 2003, the 56-year-old from Norfolk was a series regular for almost 1,500 episodes.

He’s also racked up acting credits in Casualty, Inspector Morse and The Royal Today.

Having had roles in many British dramas, it’s no surprise that he’s made his name in soap history, but his real life has had its fair share of drama, too.

In 1994, Peter married Claire King, now 59, who played the role of his stepmother Kim Tate on Emmerdale.

The pair were married for 10 years until their divorce due reports of Peter having an alleged affair with Claire’s then Emmerdale co-star Samantha Giles, now 50, who starred as Bernice Blackstock on the show.

Speaking to the Mirror in 2005, Claire said: “I questioned Pete and he admitted it had been going on for a while. He told me it was over but then it started again. At that point I said, ‘Well, you have to go with her then, because it obviously isn’t going to stop.’

“She was there when I was in Emmerdale and you can’t help those thoughts going round in your head – did he fancy her, did he… it’s all that cr***y teenage stuff.'”

The actress also claimed that she was the last to know about the alleged affair.

“The distance thing was not great. We split up due to his infidelity. What hurt was the fact that every b*gger knew,” she said on Channel 5’s In Therapy in 2017.

“I suspected but everyone knew who because it happened in my house, in the local pub, the workplace.

“I did suspect and I did suspect who but officially I was the last to know.”

Despite the alleged infidelity, there were chances of the two rekindling.

Claire continued: “Then they split and we thought we’d work it out, then they got together again. Six months later… finished. I felt as though it was the end of something but also a failure. And I didn’t want it to be a failure.

“It was a loss as well. It was a failure of a marriage but the loss of a good friend. I really didn’t know it would affect me so badly.”

Speaking about an awkward encounter she had with Samantha at an awards ceremony, Claire said: “Samantha was presenting at the awards do, which was bad timing to say the least. I was in the loos when she walked in.

“When she saw I was there she literally ran into the cubicle – I don’t know why, I wasn’t going to hit her.”

All three parties have certainly moved on from their past entanglement and it’s been reported that Peter and Claire have since re-married other people.

In a 2017 interview with Loose Women, Claire reflected on her past marriage: “I was working, we had the distance between us. It got past the seven-year itch, and it was coming to that fork in the road. So nobody was really to blame. It was just that we had grown apart.”

Despite the awkward encounter the actress once had with her former co-star, Claire insisted that she and Samantha have put the past behind them.

“I met Sam at a funeral of a close friend of ours, and she said, ‘Look I’m really sorry’. After all these years it’s water under the bridge. But we are friends.”
