Sean Lock’s stand-up special Sean Lock: Keep It Light will be played on Thursday night on Channel 4 at 10pm in a tribute to the comedian, followed by 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown at 11pm.
The decision was made today to show the back-to-back programmes after his agent confirmed that he had died of cancer at the age of 58.
Sean’s presence on Channel 4 was definitely noted by those who worked around him and fans who watched him with some of his most popular shows including both 8 Out Of 10 Cats and the spin-off 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, as well as Have I Got News For You and QI.
Channel 4’s chief creative officer Ian Katz described him as “one of the most original voices in comedy and one of the loveliest people too”, adding: “We owe him a huge debt of thanks for all the years of laughter and fun.”
In a statement released by Channel 4 they said how he had played a “pivotal role on the channel for over two decades”.
Sean’s death was confirmed by his agent, with a statement that read: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Sean Lock.
“He died at home from cancer, surrounded by his family.”
They added: “Sean was one of Britain’s finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy.”
Friends, fans and co-stars of the comedian have all come forward to share tributes, with his close friend Lee Mack explaining that he “knew this day was coming”, but added, “It’s no less heart-breaking.”
Jimmy Carr, who worked with him on 8 Out Of 10 Cats, wrote in a tweet: “Brutal news about Sean Lock today.
“I loved him. I’m watching clips of him right now – laughing and crying. I’ll miss him so much.”
Sean was diagnosed with skin cancer in 1990, but made a full recovery and was able to focus on building his career in comedy.
He appeared on multiple shows and did his own stand-up appearances for years, before becoming a regular on 8 Out Of 10 cats in 2005, a position which he held for 18 series.
