Wentworth's Susie Porter teases show return as final season gets off to explosive start

Wentworth got off to an explosive start when it returned to screens this week for the final season.

But actress Susie Porter, who plays Marie Winter, has suggested the Australian prison drama could return in the future – which is sure to delight fans of the show, which airs on 5Star in the UK.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star about the series coming to an end, Susie said: “I suppose it’s a mixture of feelings.

“When we were filming it last year in the middle of Covid, it was quite difficult.

“We were very grateful we were working and could still keep going, but our ending was different. We didn’t have our normal wrap party or proper goodbyes to everyone.”

Susie Porter suggested there could be ‘re-incarnations’ of Wentworth in the future

The 50-year-old continued: “I think it’s really great where the series goes in the last 10 episodes but of course when you finish something, I’ll miss all the cast mates – we all get on really well, we all had such great camaraderie.

“Even though we could be arch enemies on screen we have a good laugh off screen, so that is sad with Wentworth coming to an end.”

But she teased: “We all kind of went, ‘it was 100 episodes, maybe it finished at a right time’. But there could be different re-incarnations in the future, you never know.”

Does that mean a spin-off could be in the works?

“I just think, you never know,” Susie said.

“We weren’t meant to film those last 20 episodes, we were told it’s not going ahead and we were all really disappointed, then six months later they rang and said we’re actually doing 20, so we were filming for eight months.

“After that happened – does anything really end? The Freak comes back… so who knows.”

Susie is, of course, referring to Pamela Rabe’s character Joan Ferguson making a surprise return from the dead at the end of the seventh series.

Ferguson – or The Freak – lost her memory after an accident and forgot about all of the terrible things she did, instead believing she was a woman named Kath.

However a major twist at the end of season eight saw her regain her memory, and it seems she will struggle with that going forward in the final 10 episodes.

It’s safe to say Wentworth got off to an explosive beginning of the end too, as fans said goodbye to Reb Keane (Zoe Terakes), who was murdered by Sheila Bausch (Marta Dusseldorp) in a truly harrowing scene.

Wentworth Prison continues Tuesdays at 10pm on 5Star
