ITV’s highly anticipated drama Stephen kicked off on Monday night, but the tragic real life portrayal left several viewers emotionally charged very early on.
The three-part sequel to the ground-breaking drama, The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, guided viewers through the shocking events that took place in 2006, 13 years after Stephen Lawrence’s unlawful murder.
But although viewers were aware of Stephen’s tragic real life story, this didn’t stop them from feeling saddened by the scenes that lay ahead.
Taking to Twitter, viewers aired their thoughts.
One fan penned: “Only 15 minutes into Stephen and I already feel overwhelmed with emotion. This boy deserves all the justice in the world.”
Another said: “The Stephen Lawrence case will always be heart-breaking.”
A third commented: “This is definitely a must-watch only a couple of minutes in and this looks good already ,very moving stuff.”
“Watching #Stephen I know it’s gonna make me so mad again. Stephen Lawrence you deserved so much better,” a fourth wrote.
While some observers also reacted to the portrayal of the police officers who handled Stephen’s case at the time.
Taking to Twitter again, one spectator wrote: “Blimey this re-enactment that these police officers just did really brought home just how horrific Stephen Lawrence’s death was , the fact that some of these c***** who attacked him are still walking free to this day makes my blood boil! Why this drama is important.”
Another viewer said: “I can imagine the police have a lot on. But this detective is JUST doing his job and getting results. It shows you that some of these officers just turn up for the money.”
While a third penned: “Watching #Stephen I cannot even imagine the amount of crimes covered up over the decades by bent, crooked Police officers.”
“This makes me so angry, the incompetence of the police is infuriating. Such a tragic waste of a beautiful life,” a fourth upset viewer chimed.
ITV’s three-part drama will tell the story of the ongoing struggle by Doreen and Neville Lawrence to achieve justice for their son Stephen.
The story will also show how detective, DCI Clive Driscoll worked closely with the Lawrences and put together an investigation that finally after more than 18 years after his death – secured the convictions of two of the gang members who committed the murder of Stephen.
