Chris Kamara was left gutted when his teammate, Sam Matterface, made a number of epic blunders on The Chase.
Friday’s episode of the ITV gameshow, hosted by Bradley Walsh, was a celebrity special which saw Chris Kamara, Sam Matterface, Jimmy Nesbitt and Seema Jaswell join forces to try and take home a hefty sum for UNICEF – a children’s charity.
The celebrity edition was in support of UNICEF’s Soccer Aid which airs on Saturday 4 September, but although it was for a great cause, the episode wasn’t short of drama.
Former footballer Chris got off to an impressive start as he banked £7,000 in his cash builder round, before managing to make it back to the team after going head-to-head against Paul The Sinnerman Sinha.
Sadly, sports presenter Seema Jaswell was up next and didn’t enjoy the same success as Chris, getting booted off after being chased down by Paul.
However, things got even worse when broadcaster Sam Matterface stepped up to face the Chaser.
Sam, who is set to commentate the Soccer Aid match alongside Chris, banked £6,000 in the cash builder but everything went pear-shaped after that.
One of his first errors came when he pressed the buzzer too quickly on a question which read: “What items do Americans call suspenders?”
Sam chose ‘tights’ before cringing as he realised he should have opted for ‘braces’.
But he then failed to answer a question on the Austin Powers films, admitting that he didn’t have “a clue” as he had never seen any of the hugely popular movies before.
The question was: “Which Burt Bacharach song inspired Mike Myers to create the character of Austin Powers?”
He also took dangerously long to submit his answer, prompting host Bradley to step in and say: “Need an answer!”
Although he managed to get an answer through, it was incorrect as he chose Walk on By rather than The Look of Love.
Actor Jimmy Nesbitt was then seen grimacing in pain during the awkward moment, before Chris shook his head in disappointment and said: “Devastating”.
As Sam was knocked out by Paul Sinha, he declared: “Close!” before Bradley stepped in to check on Chris, calling out: “Chris, what’re you doing?!”
Football commentator Chris could then be seen trying to hide behind his desk in misery at his teammate’s performance – fuming that he could now be the only player to enter the Final Chase.
The studio erupted in laughter as Chris cried: “I’m on my own!”, even though Jimmy was still in the competition.
Fans on Twitter were quick to react to Sam’s bitter loss, and they were far from impressed with his performance.
One fan asked: “Has that Sam guy ever watched The Chase before?
A second wrote: “No idea who that Sam is but deserved to go out with that performance.”
A third protested against his lack of speed at answering questions and commented: “Just press the F***ing button!!!”
Later in the show, Jimmy was knocked out by The Sinnerman after trying to secure a whopping £93,000 for UNICEF.
In a nail-biting Final Chase, Chris had to face Paul alone like he feared.
Paul beat him confidently, but Chris still walked away with £1,000 for the children’s charity.
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
