Piers Morgan almost knocked himself out after being stunned by our front-page story about him.
The gobby TV star said seeing our headline about his free-speech win over Meghan Markle, 40, wowed him, he slammed into a window while reading it.
He admitted the nasty knock – which left him with a cut and bloodied head – happened as he walked out of the GQ Awards on Wednesday night during a speech by Meghan’s husband, Prince Harry, 36 via video link.
Piers, 56, said: “To my delight, most of them (the newspapers) had splashed my victory all over their front pages.
“The Daily Star was perhaps the most astute: ‘GOBBY PIERS IN FREEDOM OF SPEECH VICTORY OVER MRS SHY – Now he’ll be even more insufferable!’
“I felt a sudden rush of exhilaration at the end of what had been a tumultuous but ultimately very satisfying day.
“Then, as I reached the exit, still staring proudly at my phone, I walked into a plate-glass window, banging my head so hard and loudly that security guards rushed over to check I was OK.
“I reeled back in agony with a cut opening above my right eye.”
Piers revealed that he and his wife Celia Walden had heard that Prince Harry was set to make an appearance at the event from his home in Montecito, California.
Explaining his reaction, he said: “So it seemed a good time to go home.
“As I left, I could hear Harry lecturing the audience about the danger of ‘misinformation’ and ‘peddling lies’, without a shred of self-awareness.”
Following this, he urged his followers to vote for him at the upcoming National Television Awards, where he is nominated for Best Presenter of the Year.
He claims that it “could possibly annoy Meghan Markle more” as he would be “crowned King of Television in front of millions of viewers”.
However, writer and broadcaster Adam Helliker claimed this ruling will fuel Meghan to speak out, which he says will widen the rift between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Royal family.
Speaking to The Sun, he said: “I think she’s going to feel more determined and it will up her game so to speak.
“She will convince all her followers that this is how Britain operates. I think she will see it as yet another method of protecting the Royal Family.
“And it just kind of – the divide is getting ever deeper. And the longer it goes on, the rift, you just wonder, how on earth can they ever come back from that?
“They will up their game in terms of putting out more statements, being more independent and just pushing away even further.”
