EastEnders viewers go wild as Janine and Kat clash in heated custody battle

Janine Butcher is no stranger to a dramatic storyline and Tuesday night’s instalment of EastEnders was no different as the Queen of Mean arrived back on Albert Square.

The character, who has been absent from Walford life since 2013, returned on Monday night under her pseudonym, Judith Bernstein, before returning to the Square to attempt to regain custody of her young daughter, Scarlett.

However, little Scarlett, who was placed in foster care, came face-to-face with her mum, who appeared to know all about her ongoing court case.

After walking into the court, Janine (Charlie Brooks) was left speechless when she saw Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) hoping to gain custody of the youngster.

Following their dramatic clash, the pair came to blows in front of punters in the Queen Vic, leaving the likes of long-standing barmaid Tracy utterly speechless.

Speaking to her rival, Kat said: “I know your game,” to which Janine instantly hit back with: “No game, no act, no scam, no lies.”

“If you was drowning and you had to open your mouth, a lie would still find time to fall out,” added Kat.

Hitting back at the leopard print lover, Janine exclaimed: “I’m not the one who waited until today to tell their illegitimate offspring, the scandalous truth about who their daddy is.”

“You’re not going to see Scarlett again,” Kat explained through gritted teeth.

Before Janine quipped: “That’s beyond your pay grade…”

“They’ll [social services] see beyond through you,” explained Kat as the pair battled for custody of Janine’s daughter.

Ensuring their feud would continue, Janine looked shocked before adding: “I’m not sure what’s brought on this frankly inappropriate claim on daughter.”

Kat, who was then furious, confronted Janine, saying: “You’ve got no idea what I’ve had to sacrifice today for that girl.”

In keeping with her dark humour, Janine joked: “Let me guess, was it a goat?” leaving onlookers speechless as their eyes darted around the busy pub.

“You think I’m just going to take this rolling over?!” screamed Kat before her nemesis exclaimed: “You usually do, anything that’s got a pulse.”

“Bring it on,” added Kat as the pair squared up towards one another.

Not backing down, Janine brazenly said: “I know you have various children by various members of the Moon family and even some by members of your own.

“But I have one child, only one, Scarlett is my daughter, the girl has my heart – this isn’t a game, Kat.”

“It’s always a game,” responded Kat before Janine claimed Scarlett would be returning with her.

Viewers, however, couldn’t get enough of the drama as they flocked to social media to share their thoughts.

“I don’t know how Kat restrained herself from decking Janine after that comment about ‘children by her own family members’,” tweeted one.

While a second penned: “Can’t wait for Kat vs Janine.”

“Kat Vs Janine tonight is classic EastEnders that we have not had in years. What a fantastic episode written by Pete Lawson, definitely one of my favourites in a long time,” tweeted a third.

Before a fourth added: “Janine is back and certainly pulled a punch about Kat’s kids, one of them especially.”

EastEnders continues on Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
