Regé-Jean Page quit Bridgerton WhatsApp group after show exit to avoid awkward chat

He is known for his breakout role as the sexy Duke of Hastings in Netflix’s hit period drama series Bridgerton.

But after his award-wining role as Simon Basset, Regé-Jean Page has revealed that he is no longer in a group WhatsApp chat with his former co-stars.

The 31-year-old British actor admitted he left the group to avoid any awkwardness after he announced he was moving on from the show and would not appear in the second series.

The star insisted to GQ magazine that he “respectfully exited” the star-studded group chat because he didn’t want to be “kicked out” when the cast inevitably started shooting.

When he was asked about the infamous chat, Page clarified to the publication: “No, the universe has expanded. So, I’m no longer in it.”

The heartthrob explained how he made the decision to leave so that other members wouldn’t have to have the awkward conversation about leaving the group with him.

He added: “I respectfully exited. I didn’t want to put them in an awkward situation where they had to kick me out.”

Bridgerton fans, including Kim Kardashian, were devastated when the Regency era drama announced that their leading man wouldn’t appear in season two back in April.

But the Londoner teased fans that he could have a surprise cameo in the highly-anticipated series which is set to follow the love life of Lord Anthony Bridgerton.

After the star was pressed about a possible cameo, Page teased: “I couldn’t possibly tell you!” before he added: “Isn’t there something wonderful about being surprised by what you weren’t suspecting?”

The news was announced via Lady Whistledown herself in a lengthy Instagram post.

The shocking post read: “Dearest Readers, While all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings

“We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family.”

She continued: “Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer – more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.”

Page had previously informed doting fans that his appearance would only be in the first season in an interview with Variety.

He admitted: “It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end.

“[I thought] ‘That’s interesting,’ because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.”
