It was an awkward moment in a night of successes at the NTAs when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview was loudly booed by the audience.
Sir Trevor McDonald had introduced a montage featuring the biggest moments from TV over the last 12 months, and a clip of the couple was featured, The Sun reported.
When Harry and Meghan’s shocking interview was shown, the huge crowd at London’s O2 arena was heard loudly booing at the screen and expressing their displeasure.
The interview aired back in March, and the montage also included a round up of clips including coverage of the Covid pandemic, as well as the tragic funeral of Prince Philip.
Meghan and Harry were unable to attend the event in person, but their interview was in the running for an award too.
They weren’t the only ones to receive jeers, as Piers Morgan was also booed during the ceremony.
He was up for Best Presenter against the likes of Ant & Dec, Holly Willoughby, Bradley Walsh and Alison Hammond for the gong.
After being jeered, Piers responded on Twitter with good humour.
He shared a now-famous clip of him storming off the set at Good Morning Britain following the row over his comments about Meghan Markle.
He captioned it “Just as well I’m not there.”
Fans saw the funny side and tweeted their amusement.
“Good to see you can laugh at yourself as well”, said one.
“Haha who said you can’t take a joke. Brilliant,” laughed another.
“You deserved to win!” insisted one.
He made a tongue-in-cheek remark after he lost out to Ant & Dec, too.
“Wow! What a shock!” he joked, after they won yet again, “Congrats to Ant & Dec. Thoroughly deserved 20th consecutive win – the way they held those jungle contestants to account during the pandemic was absolutely brilliant” with a clapping emoji.
Piers recently celebrated after Ofcom cleared him of any wrongdoing following a record number of complaints about his comments on GMB following the Meghan and Harry interview.
Many fans have been calling for his return to GMB, but he hasn’t yet announced what his future plans are.
