Hugo Hammond has revealed that he got into the Love Island villa by sending ITV bosses an audition tape on a whim.
The Hampshire-based hunk even admitted that he initially applied to the hit dating show as a joke, and submitted his 90-second video tape after a boozy night with his mates.
However, show bosses clearly liked the cricket-loving singleton because he was soon accepted onto the reality show, where he shot to fame on TV in front of millions.
Speaking on Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing’s Private Parts podcast along with his fellow Islander Aaron Francis, Hugo admitted that he originally applied to the show “as a joke”.
He recalled: “So I actually applied as a joke at the start. I’d recently become single and me and my housemates… we’d had one too many ciders or something and we were like ‘Let’s just make some videos and apply’.
“So we sent like a 90-second video off.”
When asked if he had to send a video off to apply for the show, Hugo confirmed that he did and that his video was “awful”.
After finding the previously unseen audition tape on his phone, Hugo played it on the podcast.
His audition tape kicked off with Hugo declaring that he was recently single and “back on the market”.
In the clip, 25-year-old Hugo said: “Hi ITV, my name is Hugo, I’m 24 and I’m a trainee PE teacher from Hampshire.
“Unfortunately, I have recently become single and I’m back on the market and obviously dating has been an absolute disaster during national lockdown so hopefully I can come [in] the villa [to] hopefully find some love”.
Later on in the clip, Hugo explained that his pals had egged him on to apply for the show, and that he’d watched the show as a fan for years.
Hugo continued by saying that he hopes he’d be popular with the Islanders and the public.
His audition video continued: “Hopefully I’ll [also] be popular with the public and this is because of my charisma, cheekiness, and hopefully my gentlemanly charm.”
In his tape, he also mentioned that he’d love to use his platform to promote wellbeing in young adults.
Hugo’s pal Aaron, on the other hand, explained that he never sent an audition tape as he was actually scouted for the show – finding out the big news that he was set to enter the villa whilst he was on a modelling shoot.
It comes as Hugo attended the recent Love Island reunion (September 5), where he sat next to his four villa “exes” for a rather awkward chat.
Hugo was placed next to Amy Day, Abigail Rawlings, Georgia Townend and Sharon Gaffka.
He has since admitted that he felt a bit “intimidated” by the atmosphere.
He said: “I don’t think it was unfair but say if it was the other way around, say it was one girl and four guys up there it would never have happened.
“So it was a little bit intimidating, a little bit like oh my god, what a situation to be in.”
