Vigil fans gobsmacked at cliffhanger ending as DCI Amy Silva finds new dead body

Sunday night’s episode of Vigil, the fourth in this superb six-parter from the BBC, definitely didn’t fail to thrill viewers.

Creator Tom Edge managed to pack a tonne of intrigue and suspense into the episode’s one-hour runtime, most of which came in the final few minutes.

That’s when Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva, portrayed by Doctor Foster actress Suranne Jones, discovered a dead body on board the HMS Vigil right before some mystery assailant charged at her.

And events leading to the gobsmacking cliffhanger were no less gripping, even if the narrative gets a tad more absurd with each new instalment.

But this is high-drama after all, so what else should audiences expect?

Episode 4 further fleshed the mystery at the heart of this police procedural.

With her mental health suffering, Amy’s ability to do her job properly is called into question by Captain Newsome.

But perhaps the crucial storyline this week was the submarine chef Jackie’s role in it all, especially seeing as her character seemed pretty peripheral.

The plot also thickened on land, with Kirsten discovering there was a Russian agent on board, even though last week’s episode appeared to kill suspicions of Russian involvement.

Fans took to social media to share their shock at Vigil’s revelations.

The show was made by the same team behind Bodyguard and Line of Duty, so it came as no surprise to see one fan write: “That was a Line of Duty-esque cliffhanger.”

“How am I supposed to wait a whole week with that ending?” asked another.

It was also unsurprising to see one viewer praise the talented Suranne Jones’ “incredible” performance.

With just two episodes of this submarine-set crime drama left to go, things are really heating up, with all sorts of twists and turns keeping audiences glued to their screens.

Is the HMS Vigil poised for sabotage? Could tension between the Brits and Russians lead to global catastrophe? Who knows.

Tune in on September 19 for the next episode.
