Louise Minchin stunned as she's surprised by husband during final BBC Breakfast show

BBC Breakfast host Louise Minchin couldn’t believe her eyes when she was surprised by her husband David in her final broadcast.

Wednesday (15 September) marked Louise’s last time hosting the BBC’s flagship morning show with her co-star Dan Walker, and she was in for a series of exciting surprises.

The show had begun with co-host Dan Walker sharing a flood of sweet fan messages to Louise on air, from viewers who wanted to let the presenter know how special she was to them.

Later in the show, Dan announced to her that he would be getting up from the sofa and walking out of the studio – leaving Louise baffled as she sat alone on the red sofa reading the rest of the auto-cue.

She was soon escorted out of the BBC building in Salford by Dan where she was greeted by a crowd of her delighted BBC colleagues who were wearing masks with Louise’s faces in order to keep their identities hidden.

The farewell party was buzzing, with a brass band to play live music as Louise’s colleagues cheered her on in the studio garden.

Louise sat alongside Dan on the sofa as she watched an emotional highlights reel of her best moments on the show from over the years, but it was soon time to reveal who some of the masked-guests really were.

Presenter Dan said: “Can we ask the next two mystery Minchins to come forward, please!”

Louise’s beloved husband David emerged from the crowd alongside Louise’s dad Patrick, and both proceeded to take off their masks.

When husband David finally showed his face, Louise cried out: “Oh!” before bursting out laughing, with the brass band playing in the background.

In heartwarming scenes, the happy pair embraced before Dan quipped: “Louise obviously knows these two very well.”

David apologised to his wife for “unashamedly lying” to her last night about being in on the farewell plans for Louise, having denied being invited to the surprise event and playing any part in it.

David had heaps of praise for his wife amid her job and triathlon stint.

He said: “I’m in awe. So courageous. The bravery, I mean just the challenges she’s taken on, all with a giggle and a smile on her face.

“And I’ve seen some of the pain that she’s gone through, and the operations, and she’s just been brilliant. So adventurous, so courageous. I’ve learnt a lot, and I think she’s learnt a lot but it’s been such fun, and thank you to the show for really leading us down that path.”

When Dan asked Louise’s father how proud he was of Louise’s achievements, he said that he was “immensely proud” of his daughter.

He said: “Immensely [proud], I mean what can you think, for a dad to have a daughter perform such a fascinating role for twenty years. Immensely proud.”

BBC Breakfast airs every day at 6am on BBC One.
