Strictly Come Dancing stars Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden were “a Covid disaster waiting to happen”, workers on the show have claimed.
The TV dance couple have both tested positive for coronavirus and are now isolating – and, as a result they will miss Saturday’s live show.
McFly star Tom has been left feeling “unwell” thanks to the virus’ influence, but his Welsh dance partner is said to be “not suffering any symptoms”.
Crew members claim the duo had raised eyebrows when it was announced after their pairing that Tom would carry on touring around the UK with his band McFly – and dancer Amy would follow him so she could keep up his training.
She appeared at one of the band’s gigs in disguise to avoid leaking her identity ahead of the Strictly launch show on Saturday, September 18.
Under strict rules for the contestants on the BBC show, each couple must stay bubbled up and not mix with the presenters, judges or other dancers.
But during the week and away from the TV studios, many stay close to home to avoid the risk of catching Covid. And some feel by going on tour, the two risked more.
A source said: “However much you socially distance and try to stay safe, it’s still a risk. This was a Covid disaster waiting to happen.”
A BBC spokeswoman said: “Strictly Come Dancing production has, and will, continue to follow strict government guidelines to ensure the safety of all on the show.”
It comes after the broadcaster confirmed that Tom and Amy will be missing next weekend’s live show, issuing a statement which read: “Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden have tested positive for Covid-19.
“The pair are now self-isolating separately following the latest government guidelines.
“While they will both miss Saturday’s live show, Strictly Come Dancing protocols mean that all being well, they will return the following week.”
Tom took to Instagram on Monday to confirm that he’ll be missing out on a few McFly live gigs, too, writing: ” It’s not always easy…
“Huge thanks to @tomabisgold for stepping in for me on these @mcflymusic shows. You’re smashing it dude. It’s not always easy but McFly’s here forever… one way or another!
“Sending my best to all the @bbcstrictly team and looking forward to getting back on that dance floor with you @amy_dowden.”
Amy commented: “Rest up, partner!”, with Tom confirming that the duo plan to bring “something special” to the Strictly dance floor for Week Three.
